i want to point out that Jeffrey Dahmer got a last meal, Ghislaine Maxwell got a therapy puppy, but a 7 year old couldn’t get a glass of water and died in custody due to dehydration. We are completely broken

@goblinpunk9 this is also most likely a consequence of fanfiction being so prominent. the only time i have seen a self insert first person POV is some dog shit fanfiction clearly written by a teenager. and there are people who's only reading experience comes from consuming fanfiction.

@alienoccult i do genuinely think part of it is bleed-over from self-insert romance fanfiction, there are a surprising number of successful self-pub authors who started out in that arena.

@goblinpunk9 maybe this connects back to people's reading comprehension in general dropping. never once in my life have i read a first person point of view and thought of it as a self insert. it's meant to be read like someone's journal. how the fuck could anyone think it's a self insert.

@alienoccult it's very strange. i write romance and it's almost always given as the reason why readers want their stories in first person. which is both very intellectually empty and also awful as a writer. i'm telling you a story, not writing a choose-your-own-adventure book lol
