Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale joined a high-level panel on accelerating maternal mortality reduction in Africa, held on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State of the African Union. He outlined Kenya’s comprehensive approach, anchored in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), reaffirming that maternal and newborn health is both a public health priority and a strategic economic investment. Key interventions include a Maternal and Newborn Health Rapid Results Initiative in 26 high-burden counties, Simulation Corners in health facilities to enhance hands-on clinical training, and deployment of 107,000 digitally enabled Community Health Promoters to support early risk identification and skilled birth attendance. Through the Social Health Authority, 29.4 million Kenyans are enrolled, with full health cover provided for teenage mothers. Additional reforms include the Digital Health Superhighway to integrate RMNCAH services, optimized supply chains through Centralized Equipment Bundling, and strengthened referral linkages via Primary Care Networks (PCNs). Fellow ministers from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Benin and Senegal also reaffirmed Africa’s shared resolve to accelerate progress toward safer motherhood across the continent.
