In recent days, a lot of attention has been paid to the 5% royalty rate in Somalia's Turkish oil agreement, where Turkey would supposedly get 90% in the initial phase in the Somali social media, where the deal has been portrayed in a negative light and used as smear propaganda against the Turkish and Somali governments. However, the point to consider here is that a 5% royalty is normal for countries at the exploration startup stage of oil, especially those with high investment risk. The rate is typically limited to the cost recovery period, during which the investor is paid back costs related to exploration, development, and security. Once this phase is over, profit-sharing terms are renegotiated in the host country's favor, in line with international practice. Somalia is not on its own; the same or even lower rates have been established by other African countries such as Kenya (5%), Ghana (10–12.5%), Uganda (8–12%), Mozambique (2–10%), and South Sudan (2–5%) to attract investors. As Somalia opens the door to the energy sector, the deliberate distortion of Turkey’s role in Somalia threatens the strong partnership between the two nations.
