Damn, the Cookie Brigade, a volunteer group which sells cookies at PAX raising money for a charity, can no longer go around PAX selling cookies because the convention center caterer doesn't want them there: reddit.com/r/PAX/comments…

@rossipedia You're missing the new most-insufferable thing, hot off the presses: "ChatGPT it".

@rossipedia At least you're not procrastinating on keeping your diary up to date.

@rossipedia Just pretend that the universe in Star Wars has an intergalactic medium which refracts light and carries sound. This also conveniently takes care of the TIE fighter sound that you can hear in space battles.

@yishan A similar fun calc: Around 205000 tonnes of gold has been mined throughout all of history. The density of gold is 19.3 grams per cm3. That gives us around 10620 cubic meters of gold ever mined, which would be a cube roughly 22 meters per side. It'd fit in a large hangar.

(Unconfined calculation) If all humans were a giant meatball, our diameter would be less than a kilometer.

The kernel (in concert with strongswan) transparently negotiates transport mode whenever traffic goes to/from known hosts. The IP addresses remain the same, as only the packet payloads are encrypted. I'm not aware of any non-ipsec approach that would do that transparently for me.

I really wish WireGuard had something akin to ipsec transport mode. I run transport mode at home to transparently encrypt traffic between my trusted hosts. It's great as it guarantees my trusted hosts aren't talking with any rogue devices in my home.

@rossipedia The good news is that wind chill doesn't affect machines, or anything else that operates at the ambient air temperature. What I'm saying is you simply need become a machine.

@bassett_green One difference I can think of: When you learn the tricks yourself it sorta feels like you're getting one over on the system since they're kinda shortcuts. When you're forced to use them it probably feels like just more annoying homework.

@bassett_green Most adults I know do the same. I think the difference is we discovered the tricks ourselves to get through annoying homework. In this case, the tricks are being explicitly taught. I do wonder if that affects retention of the tricks, but it doesn't seem like a bad approach.

@rossipedia I do this at every restaurant / fast-food place I frequent. As far as I'm concerned, they all only serve 1 thing.

@gooeyblob The populace where go where the eyeballs are, so if Mastadon remained chill / neutral I suspect it'd never break into the mainstream. That's probably fine - fringe places should exist. It unfortunately won't help with the human problem of anger driving eyeballs.

@gooeyblob Sadly anger drives far more engagement than neutral, so it will usually be the more successful feed from a business growth perspective :(

@rossipedia nice. Yeah, I have a pi with a temp sensor sitting in my garage ensuring it doesn't go below freezing. Been running like 5 years straight with no troubles.
