As a historian of the US who grew up Quaker and loves oatmeal, I just had to share.

@jazzydomenique Why were immigrants overrepresented in US suicide statistics c. 1880s-1920s?

@KeriLeighMerrit I thought I knew the Colfax Massacre, but then when I decided to teach it last year, I went back to Leeanna Keith's book and remembered how complicated the context was.

As a historian of Reconstruction and someone who’s written about Colfax PLEASE do NOT buy or read this book. This is one of the most complicated events (& periods) in US History & tbh not many PhDs truly understand it. Dana Bash??? Are you fucking kidding??😂🤣😭😭😭 1/3

@SMGonzalezWI My kid drew them to my attention because he was confused. He thought the Republicans were the anti-immigration party.

@alison_efford Yup, and nearly every Dem running for reelection is rolling out the same message. And even the party’s messaging in its Spanish language ads are tacking hard to border security…

Again, the Democratic Party is doubling down on it’s return to late ‘90s politicking on immigration. We’re gonna hear platitudes about ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ but the name of the game is all border security, all the time.
Paola Ramos@paoramos

In CNN interview, Vice President Harris doubles down on her immigration stance, attacking Trump not on his anti- immigrant rhetoric, but on the way he failed to support the bipartisan border bill. She once again framed herself as a tough, border- state prosecutor.

@KobysKing I don't know your situation, but I find this a particularly hard time of the academic year. I'm still trying to finish up summer things, my kid is not yet back in school, the fall semester work has started, but the fall semester routine has not.

Feeling really overwhelmed this morning by the amount of stuff I have on my plate (job app stuff, diss chapters, teaching, personal life, etc.) Any words of encouragement or tips on navigating all of this would be greatly appreciated

@HoneckMischa If you haven't read it yet, @TabulaRasmussen's book might be valuable. His Scandinavian American Republicans weren't abolitionist, but their land focus is very interesting.

@_jonathansjones I have to obscure names for two sets of records I'm using. I considered using first names and last initials throughout, but I don't think I will. Martin Summers does in City of Magnificent Intentions.

@_jonathansjones I'd be interested in a discussion of whether historians should respect the privacy of people who lived in the past. I'm thinking about whether and how to obscure identities in my book on suicide and suffering.

@_jonathansjones There are some 1910s records (PA and WI) I really wanted to see, but they were completely restricted. I will read the piece!
