Theodor Bibliander (1504–64), the scholar who first printed the Corpus Toletanum, which included the oldest Latin translation of the Qur’an, had access to Arabic MSS of the Qur'an but couldn't read them. One (below) had an apparatus noting variant qirāʾāt, a "critical edition".
