Some stories quite literally fuel history—and this one begins with a bold idea and a lot of perseverance. Meet Anthony Lucas (born Antun Lučić in Split, 1855–1921), the Croatian-American engineer whose vision helped launch the modern U.S. oil industry. After arriving in the United States in 1879, Lucas pursued his belief that vast oil reserves lay beneath the Texas coast. That conviction led to the legendary Spindletop gusher near Beaumont in 1901, which erupted at an astonishing 100,000 barrels a day and became the world’s first major oil strike. Spindletop ignited the Texas oil boom, helped give rise to companies like Gulf Oil and Texaco, and reshaped America’s industrial future. Lucas’s legacy is a lasting reminder of how Croatian Americans brought ingenuity and determination that helped power the growth of the United States. #A250 #USCroatiaTies #CroatianAmericans
