@KansasCity has begun amending the short term rental program; the first of a pair of ordinances was heard today by City Plan Commission. It transfers the administration of the program from Planning Dept to Neighborhoods. Sounds good? Guess what else is in there…..1/

When there are no residents, we lose. We lose e-tax, school enrollment, census responses, neighborhood connectivity, volunteers, and voters. Our Kansas City has a spectacular fabric of neighborhoods that runs on people power. Don't sell that out - I won't. #allinkcmo

Cash offers artificially reset the comparable values for real estate appraisals. They don't have to be justified for a mortgage lender, but do support higher future sales prices. Add the inventory reduction (at all price points) and this is a lead foot on our housing crisis.

We have no shot at developing an holistic housing policy if we can't agree that full-time short term rentals #airbnb do NOT belong in residential neighborhoods and multi-family buildings. Collecting tourism taxes while gutting neighborhoods is incredibly short-sighted. 1/
