Since I first covered this massive open air drug market and the resulting catastrophe of homelessness in 2017, the city seems to be inadvertently nurturing the despair. But glimmers of hope are found in people fighting to make their streets safe and healthy again. And it starts with shutting down the drug dealers profiting off the pain.

Someone messaged me about an area that had been completely trashed by a homeless individual. I showed up with a case of heavy-duty bags and got to work. In one hour, the entire area was cleaned. When I finished, I called the city to come pick it up. That’s it. No bureaucracy. No meetings. Just action. This is civic responsibility. It’s simple, it’s immediate, and it works. Anyone can do it.
