I'm starting a new group at Brown w/ @ShriramKMurthi and @KathiFisler called the Cognitive Engineering Lab. We build tools to make you smarter, grounded in cognitive science and programming language theory. And we're hiring PhD students! cel.cs.brown.edu

@yminsky Done it, like it, but never tried more interactivity. One huge benefit is the ability to run in gitpod as well as codespaces. Codespaces support jupyter labs, but gitpod only supports VSCode. Works perfectly on those online IDEs.

So, anyone have experience using VSCode for Python notebooks, instead of Jupyter? I'm curious if folk have found it too effective when used for real work.

People who complain "CS students today don't even take X!": do you know how much CS has grown? I pulled up the @BrownCSDept course list and marked in yellow all courses that did NOT exist ~20y ago (when many grumblers graduated). YMMV, but there are way, WAY more things to learn.

@phillipdawson I'm fascinated by the line of thinking in this infographic. Chatty G is incorrect so often and in such subtle ways that use _during_ learning seems fraught. Students can't see the subtle errors and progress with a now-reinforced misunderstanding.

See me on LinkedIn - I've quit X (Phillip Dawson)
Useful and interesting - and to me highlights our obsession in education with the final written form of work (which you must not outsource you naughty student, that’s plagiarism), rather than the actual thinking and ideas behind it (which is fine to get from old mate Chatty G)

As teachers, it is our responsibility to guide students through the use of generative AI in a way that is ethical & responsible. If we don't teach them these explicit skills, how can we expect them to make informed choices? #generativeai #education #ai #edchat #edutech #AIinEd

So the good news is that in my current project I'm learning really cool stuff about a symptom-level structure of psychopathology, but the bad news is I'm now pretty sure my whole PhD was wrong

I am excited to be a part of this Girls to Graduates project, with an amazing team, both within Macquarie Uni (including @_MQ_WP and @MQSciEng) and externally. I look forward to developing the future Superstars of STEM.

If you're using Holbert in the classroom, please tell us! So far, I'm aware of two classes in which it is/will be actively used and two more where instructors tell me they plan to use it at some point but haven't developed the materials yet.

Had my obligatory maccas potato thing yesterday. They are so far from the real thing they don't qualify as either scallops or cakes. I reckon they are potato nuggets.

@AlexP_DownUnder @splashcon Deep gratitude to @caizixian, who did a phenomenal job wrangling video for the conference. 🙏 In the era of hybrid conferences and global real-time participation, the complexity of video runs at another whole level. Zixian did a great job ensuring things went off smoothly. 🙏
