I grew up pretty well off, my parents were entrepreneurs, so life was easy up until my teenage years. Then came their nasty divorce, and that opened the gates of hell. It got so bad, my sister would pray every night that money would just disappear, she believed it was pure evil.
We were in the courthouse almost every week over settlement orders. That dragged on for nearly two years, until her wish came true. We lost everything in the Bernie Madoff pyramid scheme. $20 million… gone. Just like that.
At 16, I found myself homeless. For two years, I learned how to survive, however I could. From shelters to soup kitchens, house to house. You meet people in the most degenerate ways. One of them was a heavy baccarat gambler, and one day he introduced me to something called “e-money.” It was mainly used for drugs, but I saw past that. As a lifelong gamer, I thought, this could be the currency for us. That’s when my addiction to Bitcoin began.
I watched a quick YouTube tutorial on how to fix iPhones and started offering repairs on Craigslist. Made $80–$100 per job. With those profits, I bought used and broken PCs and started mining Bitcoin. Back then it was trading between $0.50 to $2.50, but I knew it was something.
There was no easy way to cash out, so I found this sketchy platform called LocalBitcoins. It worked. I sold mined BTC for cash and reinvested it all. About a year later, ASIC miners came out. I went all-in and bought five using every dollar I had. The operation got so big I had to shut it down in 2016, turns out the warehouse I was renting wasn’t cool with me not paying the electric bill. They thought I was just “starting a company.”
Then Mt. Gox collapsed. Nearly wiped me out. Dodged so many hacks and bullets during those days. Still, I grinded through it, until the ICO boom. I absolutely crushed it.
But I made one big mistake: I got cocky with leverage. I took a 30x on $750K. And when Bitcoin crashed in January 2018, I watched everything I’d built vanish in five minutes. That sent me into a dark spiral I didn’t think I’d escape.
When NFTs launched, CryptoPunks, CryptoKitties, I bought a bunch and forgot about them. 2019 rolled around, and that’s when I got my second wind. Since then, it’s been a battle, but nothing I regret.
Yeah, this is long, but it’s a reminder to anyone out there:
No matter what, never quit. Never give up.
The rest is history.
