When I gave birth to my baby, one of my bosses in the state ministry asked me to send my account number so he could send a gift for the newborn. I was excited and grateful, so I sent it immediately. Days passed, weeks passed, months passed… no alert came. Eventually, I forgot about it and moved on with life and motherhood. He suddenly called me few days ago requesting a document he needed for a contract bidding process. Immediately, I remembered the promise he made when my baby was born. For a second, I almost ignored the request because the newborn he promised a gift is already running around and speaking in full sentences now. 😂 But I still sent the document because I didn’t want someone else’s action to change my own character. I told this guy I was too tired to come over after work, and he just said “okay, get some rest.” So I took a shower, got in bed, and immediately passed out with my phone on silent. At like 1 a.m. I wake up to my sister whisper-screaming my name from the doorway. She goes, “There’s a man outside.” My heart DROPPED. I look out the window and it’s him. Standing there holding a paper bag from the convenience store down the street. I opened the door half asleep and asked what he was doing there. He goes, “You sounded exhausted earlier so I brought snacks and juice.” I just stared at him because why are you outside my house at 1 a.m. with Capri Suns like a worried parent. Then he looked at me and went, “Also… you weren’t answering, so I thought maybe you died.” The way he said it so casually almost took me out. I told him I was alive, just asleep. He nodded like that made perfect sense, handed me the bag, and started walking back to his car. Then right before he got in, he yelled: “So are you still too tired or was that just a soft rejection?” I laughed so hard I almost choked.

Yesterday, I texted our gateman to come and collect his Easter rice. I told him to come with his plate because I had run out of takeaway packs. He replied, “Don’t worry ma.” I was a bit surprised because this is something I always do during festive periods. The only difference this time was the plate. I didn’t think much of it… Until my neighbour called me later and said the gateman reported me. He said I disrespected him, how can I ask a married man to bring a plate like a beggar just to collect food? I’m honestly still in shock. It was never that deep for me… I was just trying to share what I had. But I guess sometimes, what feels like kindness to one person… can feel like disrespect to another. Did I actually do something wrong?

When I built my first house in Abuja, I was earning 250k from one job and another 130k from another job = 380k. I got money to buy land from salary paid after ASUU strike was called off (6 months salary in bulk). From that 380k combined salary I built a well furnished 3 bedroom house. It took me 24 months with an extra loan of 1 million. It took 3 months to save up to buy tiles, some months I buy cement & keep it, another month na only sand the money go reach. But I persevere. Some nights na Akara & akamu me and my wife go drink to bed till we complete everything with fence and gate. When we moved to the house, there's this boldness I had that I can achieve anything I want & nothing is too big for me to achieve. As a man you need that! After few months, an Alhaji knocked on my gate and said he likes the house very beautiful and nice. He asked if I want to sell as he's looking for a house in that area he can do weekends. He asked me for my price I said I am not selling. He disturbed me for months. Bottom line. Don't take advise from online peeps, your reality & their reality are not the same. The house is worth 3x the amount I built it (It's just 4 years ago). There's no amount of interest that would give me 3x the capital in 3 years. Don't take directions from someone who has never been to where you're going or lived your life. Taking advice from strangers is a big risk!
