It may be a few more business days before Kevin Warsh is sworn in. He needs a presidential commission and to complete promised divestments, which can take a week or so. Meantime, here are some clips of five formative moments from Jay Powell’s tenure. wapo.st/4961z98

Kevin Warsh confirmed Fed chair on most partisan confirmation vote ever (since Congress mandated separate vote to confirm chair). Dems likely deemed Warsh too close to Trump-- unwilling to distance himself from POTUS before the Senate even on who won the 2020 election.

Warsh's 54-45 confirmation at chair reflected partisan divides now extending to the Fed, whose chiefs have traditionally won wide bipartisan support. Powell received at least 80 votes both times he was confirmed. Bernanke won by voice vote in 2006. washingtonpost.com/business/2026/…

Ahead of Warsh's confirmation, Trump ally Steve Bannon used his “War Room” podcast to prepare MAGA faithful for disappointment. Fresh inflation data made it “highly unlikely” that Warsh would have “the flexibility to cut rates," he said. wapo.st/4uERCro

The Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh to the Fed board 51-45, w/one Democrat —Fetterman — crossing over. Chair vote tomorrow shaping up to be much narrower than for Powell, who was confirmed 84-13 in 2018 and 80-19 in 2022. Bernanke confirmed by voice vote in '06.

“Not even a little bit‚” Trump said when asked to what extent “Americans’ financial situations” are motivating him to reach a deal to end the Iran war. Trump spoke to reporters on the White House South Lawn before departing for his trip to China. wapo.st/3R6Cgxt

Seen some say that ex-rent & OER the core was moderate, but not sure this is the case. Median CPI likely 0.40% and 16% trimmed likely 0.44%. Core ex-rent&OER was 0.26%, 3.1% SAAR. YoY rose to 2.3% vs a 2017-19 avg of 1.2%, so more than a full pp above pre-covid rate.

He didn’t need a name tag at Hoover.

John Taylor at the @HooverInst monetary policy conference last week. Not only a legend in macroeconomics, but he also hired me at US Treasury right out of grad school and later invited me to present at the Hoover conference. Both opportunities opened doors for me. Thanks, John!

Inflation has run above the Fed’s 2% target for 5+ years, and is now moving the wrong direction. Meanwhile, a divided FOMC is balking at a lean toward more rate cuts & Trump wants rates lower fast. Kevin Warsh inherits all of this as early as Wednesday. washingtonpost.com/business/2026/…

Fed Chair Powell really did “wear out the carpets” on Capitol Hill. (A slide from @td_econ’s presentations at @HooverInst monetary policy conference.)

Average job growth over the past three months is at 48,000. Counterintuitively, that's a solid pace of hiring, although it is muted compared with the boom years coming out of the pandemic. wapo.st/4trNxWG
