I had a wonderful and productive week crashing the @jku_econ seminar, visiting friends, presenting work at the 15th (!) Transatlantic Workshop on the Economics of Crime, eating fondue, and walking up a mountain! Hope to see you all again very soon!

@_austrian @analisapackham Hi @_austrian Analisa was carrying very precious cargo. She packed her bags at night, pre-flight and it included important stuff that belongs to a VIP and rocket man is angry and might have to cancel his next gig. Please help.

@analisapackham [1/2] Hi Analisa, I'm sorry but there is no general phone number for inquiries about your missing luggage. The contact information of the responsible team is on the missing luggage report itself.

Also you can BE the organizer at the conference! If nothing is happening then just shout “meet at the bar at 5pm” or wherever, send everyone an email. Everyone is always looking for places to go or to know what others are doing. If there are no plans YOU can make it happen!

Importantly, in these sessions people will often announce happy hours/dinners. GO TO THESE THINGS if you can. Find the group extrovert (there’s always one—if you’re ever in one of mine, find me). This person will introduce you to people/chat your ear off. /11

@AmandaYAgan You are the expert, Amanda! =) I feel judge IV is very popular here, but I am an outsider. I just need to do some non-DiD work for once =P So looking for another strategies that are popular and Icould work on

This is for #Econtwitter What kinds of causal inference tools are popular when working with Crime Economics problems? I understand the dominant approach is Judge IV, right? But are there other tools? I‘ve been trying to dig into new waters and Econometrics of Crime seems very cool!

@AmandaYAgan @deaneckles @emilycleslie Thanks so much Amanda for sharing your data! Super helpful. Unfortunately it looks to me like the Judge Judge FE data is not publicly available, though, unless I'm missing something?

Examiner designs or "judge IVs" use variation in the leniency of decision-makers for causal identification. Are there good public data sets with this setup? I'm thinking of starting some methods research here, and public data really helps.

I hope you find it useful (though it was completed a while ago, so apologies for recent relevant papers that are not included). Thanks @sndurlauf for the opportunity to write it!

HCEO member @AmandaYAgan and colleagues find consistent evidence that removing a criminal offense from records does not improve labor market outcomes. Gig work through online platforms is an exception. nber.org/papers/w32394

This super thorough paper uses multiple natural experiments + incredible administrative data to measure how sealing criminal records affects employment (FCRA rules and Clean Slate policies). Punchline: if you care about this issue, it's probably time to look for other options.
