In reality, we need more judges who are learned in Islamic law in our state and federal High Courts. The reason is that these courts have wider jurisdiction over Islamic law cases, even more than the Sharia Court of Appeal (SCA), due to the restriction placed on the SCA by the provisions of section 277 (1 & 2) that confines its jurisdiction to appellate and supervisory civil cases related to Islamic personal law (IPL) only. At the same time, the same constitution (in s. 252 & 272(2)) grants the High Court wider jurisdiction over all other civil cases and exclusive jurisdiction over criminal cases. The import of the broader powers conferred to the High Courts means that they can preside over all Sharia civil cases not related to IPL, including cases related to Islamic banking and finance, and all Sharia criminal cases, and this was the position of the Supreme Court in Magaji v. Matari, and the position of the Court of Appeal in a plethora of cases like Haruna & 1 Or v. Suleiman & AG Zamfara State, Asayayah v. Asayayah, Ado & 1 Or v. Dije, etc. This becomes more pertinent because the National Assembly has repeatedly refused to expand the jurisdiction of the SCA, not considering the lack of requisite competence in most of the High Courts in handling cases related to Islamic law. Most especially, in light of the growing Islamic financial market in Nigeria and the pressing need for competent judicial personnel who could handle disputes related to the over 4 billion USD industry in the country. To the law experts reading this, what is your opinion?

When fearing harm or betrayal, you may recite the following: "Allahummak-fineehim bimaa shi'ta." "O Allah, suffice (i.e. protect) me against them however You wish". 🤲
