This war is already threatening the political economy and security model of GCC states. It's a war they didn’t choose, but were pulled into. Yet seeking a “defanged and enfeebled” Iran risks a wider, more destructive conflict—one more likely to ultimately end in state collapse and civil war than any form of stable regime change. This outcome would generate greater long-term instability for the Persian Gulf region than de-escalation and a viable off-ramp. The reality is that the GCC's options aren’t ideal given the very real risks of a wider war and prolonged instability in their immediate neighborhood. But a diplomatic off-ramp remains the only path that offers any chance of a more stable and lasting end state.
