Today’s police raid on Hong Kong’s June Fourth museum and yesterday’s arrests of four members of Tiananmen vigil organizer Hong Kong Alliance are the clearest sign yet that remembering the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown will no longer be tolerated in Hong Kong.

We have heard the reports of explosions in and around the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. While we are not in a position to confirm the attacks, we urge all parties on the ground to take all measures necessary to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law.

Targeting Apple Daily over articles that allegedly breached the National Security Law is a violation of freedom of expression. All restrictions on AD's operations must be lifted immediately. The HK authorities cannot force out media outlets who publish views they don’t like.

Possible imminent shutdown of Hong Kong's Apple Daily following arrests of executives, seizing of journalistic materials + freezing of assets is an alarming development and an ominous moment for press freedom in the city. This is effectively a HK government ban of a newspaper.

Hong Kong tabloid newspaper Apple Daily will cease publication on June 26 if its board decides at a meeting on Friday it cannot continue to operate, the company said in an internal memo seen by Reuters reut.rs/2ScZdRo

Amnesty International condemned the Nigerian government’s suspension of Twitter. We called on the authorities to immediately reverse the unlawful suspensions to gag the media, repress civic space, and undermine Nigerians' freedom of expression and access to information.

The arrest of @zouxingtong for “promoting unauthorized assembly” on 4 June appears to be yet another attempt to deter people to commemorate the victims of the Tiananmen crackdown. Asking people to light a candle is not a crime. No one should be punished for peaceful expression

People do not need to seek permission from the state to join a peaceful assembly. Nor can peacefully protesting be deemed as "inciting" others to violence. These sentences are disproportionate and politically motivated.

The extreme prison sentences handed to eight pro-democracy figures for their role in an "unauthorized protest" in 2019 are yet another attempt by the Hong Kong authorities to silence opposition voices. All have been jailed simply for the peaceful exercise of their human rights.

The banning of the June Fourth vigil in Macau due to a risk of "subversion" is a further example of an intensifying clampdown on human rights - and may offer a hint to the true reason for Hong Kong's Tiananmen vigil being outlawed.

The anniversary of George Floyd's death is a painful reminder of the generations of violence towards Black people in the United States. Today's about recognizing inequalities that minorities faced, also about pausing, reflecting, grieving, and healing. #BlackLivesMatter #BLM

Today's guilty verdict and fine for Bao Choy set a worrying precedent that could be used to target other Hong Kong journalists carrying out their legitimate work.

The conviction of Bao Choy for giving false statements to access pubic records - an unprecedented charge against a Hong Kong journalist - appears to be an attempt to punish her for her role in a narrative-setting RTHK documentary that was critical of the Hong Kong Police Force.
