This announcement would’ve surprised me even just a few months back, but I’m *so excited* to share that I’ve recently accepted a position with Rancho Biosciences as a Scientist!!

That amazing paper you spent years on? That amazing breakthrough you had? Very likely you built this following the work of others (very few exceptions), just as others will build off yours. Science is a continuum. Want to leave a lasting legacy in science? Be generous & be kind.

I would be at least 50% less down/demotivated by the academic job search process if I didn't get ghosted by 100% of searches every year--regardless of how far I make it. yes, ik, PR rules, etc....that does not make the process easier.

This. Part of our goal should be to broaden student’s horizons: - academia can be awesome - pharma can be awesome - biotech can be awesome - consulting can be awesome - teaching can be awesome It depends on the student/trainee and we should present options so they can choose.
Jen Heemstra@jenheemstra

Faculty who think the only valid career option is staying in academia are not only cheating their students out of the amazing diversity of career paths that exist, but also cheating themselves out of the chance to celebrate their mentees when they find their unique career path.

Nice monday morning surprise to see this is finally out! A long time in the making - first submitted in 2021. But so proud of this work and all the effort that went into this!
David Kennedy@dkenned11

Long time in the making but it's finally out. Heroic effort by @amrita2989 and former undergrad Anton Aluquin exploring ecological correlates of drug resistance using the vast majority of human bacterial pathogens and the drugs used to treat them academic.oup.com/evlett/advance…

Not bad for a dishwasher. I’d walk by this theatre on my way to the train home from work. I’d tell you some story about how I dreamt that one day….but that’s bullshit. I’d just think it looked warm inside and I was freezing. 20 years later, I intend to find out.

In 2024 we just packed out the Chicago theatre 🙏 In 2002 I had four part time jobs in Chicago. I washed dishes, was a security guard, dumped chemicals at a paint factory, and worked in an after school kids program. Not complaining. All decent jobs. Paid in cash. I had terrible grades and a theatre degree the year after 9/11. Was happy to have them. I’d walk past this theatre freezing and broke. You work part time, you don’t stay warm very long. And this isn’t one of those like ‘I swore I’d sell it out someday’ stories. Nah, I’d just look at all the lights and I wondered if it was warm inside. I can’t wait to find out.
