They only use the diminutive or the child's "other" name. I broke down this week & shared how hurtful this is to me & asked that they use the child's name. My MIL said she will never like the name but will use it if it means that much to me, my FIL isn't speaking to me. AITA?

I gave my baby an unusual name - it's a Spanish word (hubby from Spain) & is hard for Americans to pronounce. I love this name & it means so much to me that family use it. In-laws have refused to do so. I worry that my child will be hurt when he realizes they dislike his name.

@AnnMemmott Is this a white paper? A gray paper? Peer-reviewed? I can't access the paper.

today I walked into class and paused to think about seating choices, and my friend turns to me and says: every time you walk into a room you just pause for a while. She's not wrong, but it made me crack up.

Monique Botha is actually they/them 🤷🏻‍♀️
I chose to do minority stress because of my values - how can you belong to a community which is actively suffering, which is marginalised, dying, victimised, in pain, and not strive for something better? I have always underpinned my work with justice for my community 14/

My husband and I are both working from home. He came over to my desk and I gave him a big hug and said "What am I thinking?" He said "I love you? What am I thinking?" I said "Let go, I have to go back to work." And we were both right.

Rough estimate from 2016 US Census data and SPARK database ratios suggests that over half a million girls with Autism (in the year 2016) have most likely fallen through the cracks. I think it helps to stop thinking in terms of ratios and use absolute numbers.

"Data is" is ALSO CORRECT! Who would've thought? Why: Latin word used in English, so you could say that "Data is" better respects the Latin conjugation, which accepted the singular OR Plural (for some confusing historical reasons that I'm not sure anybody cares about).

"Bernstein gets it across with his use of tritones, unresolved musical intervals found throughout “West Side Story”’s score possessing a tortuousness that can convey as many sumptuous dimensions as marjoram" @JohnHMcWhorter on "I have a love" WSS ❤️❤️❤️ writing style

@twillierod The citations in this paper: (Anderson 2007; Norrelgen 2015; Rose 2016; Tager‐Flusberg 2013). Norrelgen and Tager-Flusberg I already responded to in the other paper you posted. Anderson is clearly outdated. Rose: longitudinal design, meaning outdated for same reasons as Norrelgen

In a class taught by an AAC expert with a PhD🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 1) nobody in this class could possibly be autistic 🤦‍♀️ 2) ALL people with ASD have receptive/expressive language deficits 🤦‍♀️ 3) 50% of people with ASD are nonverbal 🤦‍♀️ 4) One speaks sign language 🤷‍♀️

@twillierod Of two citations in this paper, one is dated 2013, meaning the data were collected prior to the DSM-V criteria, so same problem I have had before. Other paper dated 2015, but it is a two-year longitudinal study, meaning the sample were selected prior to the DSM-V, so same again.

@twillierod We don't know, but I can tell you that there are most likely a LOT of women out there who have not yet been diagnosed, and there is a lot of stigma against them getting a diagnosis or being even included in autism, and that is one reason that accurate statistics are important

@twillierod The change to the DSM-V went from "autism" as a diagnosis defined by language delays or deficits, to autism, including PDD-NOS and Aspergers, where Asperger's (at least) is defined as "no language delays or deficits" - how many ASD people have language delays is important to know

@twillierod My teacher had the same motivation as you. While the goal is noble, lying is just never ok. Using poor stats that have been produced out of bias and poor categorization is data manipulation, and I consider it lying.

@twillierod I have also had episodes of being unable to speak, that is not relevant. Presenting a statistic, whatever it is, because of a sentiment of concern for non-verbal or functionally non-communicative individuals is still misrepresenting the data!
