I am highly disappointed in @iamedem, @enammusic__ , @KafuiDey, @fellamakafui_ and all others who saw nothing wrong with this song and video. I read somewhere that the choice of costume doesn’t resonate with the song, and I completely agree because why should you talk about being “Volta vi” while dressed in suit and tie? This is not our culture, and I indulge Ewes from all around the globe to rise and speak. We made these celebrities who they are, and so if they take us for granted, we shall cancel them. We appreciate their craft, but we cannot stay silent when our identity is being misrepresented. For a song like this, the most appropriate attire should have been akple kple fetri detsi, with a touch of akpatogui, koobi, momoni, dawadawa, and most importantly, edzekor. Enam shouldn’t have worn that white garment. She looks like “Dada Maria” from Kpando Agbnorxoe. She could have worn “abladzo makpa” or something like that to look more like the Hadzi Vodushi she is. That aside, this is not just a song but a story about Ewe identity reminding generations of who we are, what we stand for, and a reason to always be proud of our identity. Our historic escape from the whims and caprices of Togbe Agorkorli reminds us of our strength, resilience, bravery, creativity, and intelligence. And beyond this, there is a deeper issue, one that is gradually creeping in, especially among Diaspora Ewes; Ewes who live outside the Volta Region. Those in Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tamale, etc. Because of our unique ability to assimilate into other cultures, some of us are beginning to lose touch with where we come from. It starts small. We stop speaking Ewe. We stop using our Ewe names. And over time, we begin to disconnect from the identity itself. Yet, we still eat akple with fetri detsi and take akpet as appetizer. And even marry one another. Back in Legon, I was chasing one nice girl. Both her parents are Ewe, yet she cannot speak the language. She doesn’t even have an Ewe name and has never been to her hometown. According to her, she is from East Legon. Can you imagine? These are the quiet losses, and they matter. Self-identity is important in every culture, and we must keep ours intact. If God wanted you to be an American, He wouldn’t have placed you here in Ghana. Not anywhere but Kpeve/Have in the Volta Region. Dear Ewes and all other tribes, let us embrace our culture, our traditions, and our identity. Be proud of your Ewe name. Be proud of your language. Eat your food with pride and dance your agbadza to the fullest. We are a special people with a strong identity. We are brave, smart, honest, and hardworking. This is who we are. Let’s own it and pass it on to the next generation. A for Akpe! — Volta Vi Kpo Dzata Nelson Elorm.
