Mari didn't know me from Adam, but she took time to search through records for me so my illegally adopted uncle could be reunited with his family. That was mere months ago and I naively thought I'd have more time to thank her. Such a good person. May she rest in peace.

A much needed assessment of the 14 years of austerity.
And, of course, the legacy of austerity will have scarred many people's lives permanently.
Let's hope the new Labour govt is end of these mean-spirted, punative policies.

The stark impact of the division of unpaid care can be seen in the impact of the birth of a first child on women and men. New fathers' wages are in line with the wages of men without children, while the wages of mothers fall dramatically compared to women without children

Child penalties typically look like this: men and women with and without kids have similar wage trajectories before children are born, and then they diverge for women, not men.

@Andy__Bell__ It also strikes me that the UK govt has categorically done this with many other (usually physical) health conditions. They'll peddle any old shite to cut their welfare spending, especially if they get to stigmatise people at the same time 🫠

This is a dangerous policy based on assertions without evidence. Downgrading people’s benefits will impoverish more people without helping them to get work. We know that this is more likely to harm than help.
