Todor Zhivkov ruled Bulgaria for 35 years and transformed a nation that had survived Ottoman rule for five centuries into an economic wasteland where citizens waited in bread lines and fled across minefields to escape. Central planning delivered poverty, repression, and technological backwardness. When Zhivkov seized power in 1954, Bulgaria's economy limped along on Soviet subsidies and five-year plans that allocated resources based on political connections rather than market signals. The state controlled every factory, farm, and shop. Prices meant nothing because bureaucrats set them according to ideology, not supply and demand. Workers pretended to work because the state pretended to pay them. The numbers tell the story. While Western Europe rebuilt itself into prosperity after World War II, Bulgaria's GDP per capita stagnated at Third World levels throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Industrial output grew on paper but produced goods so shoddy that even other socialist countries rejected Bulgarian exports. Farmers fled collective agriculture for black markets, creating food shortages in a country with fertile soil and favorable climate. Zhivkov's planners allocated capital to politically favored heavy industry while consumer goods remained scarce luxuries. You couldn't buy quality shoes, but the state built steel mills that operated at massive losses. Foreign debt exploded as Bulgaria borrowed hard currency to import basic necessities it should have produced domestically. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, but Bulgaria's economic recovery took decades because socialism destroys the entrepreneurial knowledge and market institutions that create wealth in the first place.

@Handre Suddenly in the April Plenum of the party in 1968 they started to speak about introducing market economy which of course was their understanding of free market. In 1985 they introduced another law for allowing small enterprises. 👇🏻
