this is most noticeable in the editing dropoff between a debut and a sophomore novel. one needs to be cleaned up to make a buzzy first impression, and the other is going to make the amount of money it's going to make whether the contents get developed or not, so why bother

people aghast that none of that AI book's editorial team seemed to clock it during the entire pub process..... everyone needs to get more jaded about major publishing companies. actual editing is a vanishingly small component of an editor's job and that's been clear for years

and when that's reality to me, and it's joyful and fulfilling, people shrieking about "sexual marketplace value" or "the wall" is like an evil bird screaming outside the window. you are not even participating in real life with that noise! you're doing something else entirely!

which is not to say "marriage is hard". but it's to say that the most fulfilling human connection I've ever had, the scaffolding of my entire life and personhood, requires me to learn and grow and pivot and put in effort and trust myself and trust my partner. over and over again.

dating discourse on here is insane so here's my hot take: i think committed partners need some kind of innate baseline commonality in the way they perceive the world, but beyond that, everything is mutually created. you build each other and the culture of your relationship.
