Right then. Let’s get one thing straight. JD Vance wants you to believe America stationed troops in Europe out of pure generosity. A kind of armed charity work, like the Red Cross but with more aircraft carriers. This is, to use the technical term, complete nonsense. America did not park eighty thousand soldiers on this continent because it felt sorry for the Germans. It did it because controlling Europe’s security architecture is worth an almost incomprehensible amount of geopolitical power. Bases in Poland, Germany, Italy and Romania are not charity. They are real estate. The most strategically valuable real estate on the planet. And this business about healthcare. The idea that America couldn’t afford universal health coverage because of NATO spending requires a very particular kind of arithmetic. The United States spends more per capita on healthcare than any country on earth, already, and still leaves forty million people uninsured. That is not a budget problem. That is a choice. A deliberate, repeated, fully conscious political choice, made by the same politicians now blaming European freeloading for American misery. Vance is doing what American politicians have done for fifty years. Finding someone else to blame for decisions made in Washington, by Americans, for American donors, in American elections. The European reporter didn’t cause the opioid crisis. She didn’t gut Medicaid. She wasn’t even in the room.
