Grad students need to stop acting so flippantly about selecting Advisors/Chairs. For the past few years, if a student wants to work with me, I essentially have them swear an oath. I don’t mess around any more. You want my guidance? Then I need your allegiance. Straight up.

Grad Students: If you’re not writing and working on Sundays, someone else is. Believe me. Every Sunday I show up to the grad student room unannounced to see who’s there working. I see the dedication. And I see the lack thereof. How bad do you want it? It’s up to you.

Directed improvisation is a great concept! It’s similar in the Chinese film industry. Some filmmakers I interviewed call this practice “reading up” 😅
