The things you try to control but can’t end up controlling you.

There’s a common phrase in coaching: “𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞.” For years, I’ve been asking coaches of various professional sports teams how they show the athletes they work with that they care. Here are some of their answers: - Call them by their name. - Ask their opinion. - Make sure your preparation is easy to detect. - Learn what their interests are. - Ask what their goals are. - Communicate often. - Tell the truth. - Don’t run from hard conversations; talk immediately. - When giving feedback, tell them it’s because you know they can do it. - Own up to your own mistakes. - Be humble. - Give strong, direct feedback without belittling or getting emotional. - Listen closely when they tell you what they are excited about. - Tell them when you notice they are making progress. - Be consistent through the ups and downs—be the same person. - Talk about things outside of sports. - Tell them about your family and interests outside of sports. - Acknowledge them every time you walk by them in the halls. - Laugh with them. Laugh at yourself. - Be willing to change your mind. - Ask questions. You don’t have to have all the answers. What else would you add??

Every coach should know how to: 1. Delegate – You can’t do it all. Empower your staff and leaders. 2. Communicate – Clear, consistent messages win. Confused teams don’t. 3. Organize – Chaos off the court = chaos on the court. 4. Motivate – Every player is different. Find what drives them. 5. Teach – Great coaches simplify the complex. 6. Adapt – The best game plans evolve. So do the best leaders. 7. Build Culture – Talent wins games. Culture wins seasons. Master these. It’s 90% of coaching success.
