Done with my first presentation at the Marketing Science Conference since my wife's passing. A big achievement for me. I was worried like a job candidate, but it went well (I hope!).

The academic job market was a long, wild, and very rewarding ride! I’m happy to share I’ll be joining @FGV_EPGE as an Assistant Professor later this year. I’m excited to be in Rio again! Doing research is fun… but doing research with a view is much better!

We find that: 1) Elasticity of demand faced by our firm is 1.63x larger due to informality 2) Eliminating energy theft would allow the firm to reduce prices by 17.7%, while keeping profits constant; 3) Price discrimination strategies are effective tools to curb informality.

Using detailed micro data, we estimate a structural model of consumer choices under informality. We leverage the model to understand outcomes under different scenarios.

On September 3, 2024, my beloved wife, best friend, and the wonderful mother of our daughter Leah, Akiko Uetake, passed away peacefully. Since June, Akiko had been battling breast cancer, which a renowned doctor at Yale Smilow Cancer Center described as “the most aggressive breast cancer I have seen in my 40-year career.” We were hopeful for her full recovery when she was first diagnosed, but tragically, the illness was too aggressive and claimed her life far too soon. Akiko was an incredibly strong and resilient person. Even when all the test results were discouraging, she never cried, never uttered a negative word, and never gave up. Instead, she became even more resilient and expressed gratitude to the doctors for their care and dedication. The same doctor remarked that he had never seen such a strong spirit in such a difficult situation. She was the person who did her best for everything. Akiko was also a fun, charming, and kind woman. Everyone who knew her remembers her big, beautiful smile—it's one of the reasons I fell in love with her. Her warmth and welcoming nature made everyone around her feel happy and at ease. Even while enduring unbearable pain, Akiko cared about other people and would crack jokes or sing silly songs to make them laugh. She was full of emotion. While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, Akiko taught me—and hopefully all of you who knew her— so much along the way. Akiko taught me the importance of strength, resilience, positivity, humor, charm, and joy. She showed us how to approach life with grace and courage. I hold Akiko in high regard as my wife and also as a human being. She impacted the way I should live. Akiko also emphasized the importance of family, friends, and community. We typically take those as given and do not recognize their values. The last three months have been devastating for us, but we have received so much support—through messages, food, help with childcare, and simply staying by our side. All of this has meant the world to us, and we cannot thank everyone enough. We are so grateful to be surrounded by such incredible people. Akiko taught us how lucky we are to be in such a wonderful community during this hardship. We will face the challenges ahead together. The good news is that our daughter Leah has inherited so many of Akiko’s wonderful traits. At just three years old, she is strong, resilient, kind, beautiful, and funny, just like her best mom. I do not know how to describe my feelings well… but thank you for everything, Akiko. I will remember every single memory we have shared forever. I love you. P.S. Here is the information about the obituary and services: marescafuneralhome.com/obituary/Akiko… Akiko and I discussed donations, and we believe that contributing to breast cancer research would be a meaningful way to honor her. These donations could help support new research and save others facing the same battle Akiko fought. Contributions in memory of Akiko Uetake can be made to the Director’s Fund at the Yale Cancer Center. Please make checks payable to Yale Cancer Center, and include “In memory of Akiko Uetake – Director’s Fund” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to Yale Cancer Center, P.O. Box 7611, New Haven, CT 06519-0611. Secure online donations can also be made at tinyurl.com/YCCdirectorfund. Thank you for your gift in memory of Akiko.
