The Environmental Reporting Collective (ERC), in collaboration with Mongabay, Mongabay Latin America, Initium, Investigative Desk, The Fourth, and Malaysiakini, undertook a comprehensive investigation into the human and environmental costs of extracting three critical energy transition minerals: cobalt, nickel, and lithium. Our latest project spans Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America, exposing how mining exploits communities, pollutes water, and threatens wildlife. In Indonesia, unsafe working conditions in nickel processing plants have led to injuries and deaths as companies rush to meet the world’s nickel demand. The Democratic Republic of Congo, which supplies much of the world’s cobalt, faces severe health impacts, particularly for women miners working in toxic, under-regulated conditions. In Argentina's Puna region, where high-altitude wetlands support rare wildlife and local farming communities, multinational corporations like Tecpetrol are rapidly expanding lithium mining. This isn't just about minerals – it's about people and ecosystems paying the price for our "clean" energy transition. Our report is now live.
