I left my phone under the sofa by accident. My husband found it, handed it back, didn't say a word. What neither of us knew, it had been recording the entire time he had his mother over. 4 hours. I almost deleted the file. It was just a voice memo, I thought it was nothing. I pressed play while I was cooking. I turned off the stove two minutes in and just stood there in my own kitchen, not moving. His mother's voice came first. "She's going to be a problem, you know that." Then my husband, the man I sleep next to, said, "I know. But we have to be smart about it. No scandal. You know how these things go." They talked for 38 more minutes. About my job. My family. My sister they never liked. About what I "deserved." About timing. I sat down on the kitchen floor and listened to every single second of it. I didn't skip anything. I didn't cry. Didn't call my mum. Didn't confront him. I saved the file, airdropped it to three people, then washed my face, fixed my hair, and went back to finishing dinner like I hadn't just heard my entire marriage collapse in one audio file. He came home at 7. I had set the table, lit a candle, poured his wine. He kissed my cheek, said "smells amazing." I said "I made your favourite." We ate. He talked about his day. I listened and smiled at the right parts. The three people I sent that audio to? My lawyer. My brother. And his boss, who is my uncle. I never brought it up. Not once. I didn't need to. Some moves you don't announce. You just make them and let people find out when it's already too late.
