I’ve investigated the history of meetings, how we can meet better, and – crucially – why we persist on holding meetings even when we moan about them. Me for Sunday Times Magazine: thetimes.com/article/135438…

Meetings. We now spend 24.8% of our working week in meetings in the UK. Up from 19.3% pre-Covid. Talking about work, rather working. How did this happen? And can we do it better? 🧵1/4

Islington does not dispute my findings but insists the scheme is justified to create “community spaces that everyone should be able to enjoy” Full story here: thetimes.com/uk/transport/a…

Is this the barmiest LTN yet? The detour required after the closure of a single road in Islington's new Mildmay LTN is set to result in: - More than a million extra miles being driven each year - 400,000 kg of extra CO2 being released Yet the council labelled it as "green" 🧵

Just dropped my son at Sheffield uni he’s gonna have the time of his life but boy does this feel weird. And yes, I cried, but I waited until I was away from him so I didn’t embarrass him. Slight chance I might cry for the next three hours down the M1 be nice to me.

There are now more HR workers than lawyers or doctors in the UK. How did a job – once a back-office function – become so central to the UK workplace? I’ve investigated in today’s Sunday Times Magazine…🧵

@KayBurley This book Kay. It was a tough read as you can imagine, but worst of all he tried to warn people what was going on in there. Particularly in Hungary, yet he was largely ignored there and the transports continued from Hungary.

The gate at Auschwitz still carries the lie ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ Work sets you free. Prisoners walked under it believing they were heading to hard labour. Almost all were walking to their deaths. Few would have glanced back to reread the untruth. Inside, the uniform barracks hold what remains. Sights that you cannot unsee. Shoes worn by children, spectacles tangled together, prosthetic limbs snatched from the weak, piles of human hair shorn from the dead. The last so heart wrenching we are asked not to photograph what would once have been plaited, tousled or flamboyantly styled tresses. Now a matted mountain of hair from those murdered by fellow humans who had no heart or no soul. Block 10 is desperate. It was a place of medical experiments. Some sterilisations carried out on women - without anaesthetic. Nearby, the standing cells just one metre square, saw four prisoners crammed in upright all night. Occasionally, a chance to sit and perhaps to sleep but only if one of the prisoners collapsed and died in the night. Their crime? Using scraps of newspaper tucked into their uniform to try to protect themselves from a harsh Polish winter. Round the corner, past myriad watch towers, remains the only gas chamber. It appears totally ordinary, its high chimney the only clue to its deadly purpose. At nearby Birkenau, part of the wider Auschwitz camp, the railway cuts through the Gate of Death to the selection ramp. Those who were immediately put to work lived in cramped, rat-infested conditions. Many starved to death within a few short weeks of arriving at the camp. Most of those who arrived through the Gate of Death - around 80% - were sent directly to the gas chambers. Those chambers now lie in ruins, blown up by cowardly Nazis as they fled Russian liberators, trying desperately to erase what they had done. But the ashes of more than a million souls are still in the soil. A marble memory of the men, women and children who believed they were being asked to take a shower before beginning work stands defiantly alongside the remains of the chambers. The silence is deafening.

@HistoryOfStokey Congrats on what you’ve achieved Amir & please sustain it on the other platforms. I see the same engagement pattern - the sheer number of followers on here means I’m reluctantly keeping this ‘on’, but it’s not remotely what it was. Pure Musk value destruction. See you elsewhere!

After 12 years of sharing Stoke Newington history here, I’ve decided to scale back. My aim has always been simple: “Promoting and Sharing Stoke Newington’s Rich History.” That’s guided everything I’ve shared in the 37,000+ posts since 2013. But in the last year, it’s been hard to ignore how limited the reach and engagement has become. As a representative sample, over the past 7 days I posted 60 times, reaching 21,965 views, an average of around 366 views per post, or just 4% of this account’s 9,120 followers. Engagement is consistently very low, and over the last 1 year and 4 months the account has gained only 120 new followers. By contrast, the same content over the same period reached: 203,811 views on Facebook (7,000 followers) 132,799 views on Instagram (6,600 followers) Analysis of the Facebook and Instagram accounts shows that a significant portion of reach comes from non-followers. While that may also be true on X, the fact remains that average views per post here have consistently remained low. X appears to prioritise content based on a mix of algorithmic signals, early engagement, and broader platform trends. Niche local history, particularly when it’s not reactive or tied to current events, may not surface as widely, even for followers who have engaged in the past. It has often felt in recent months that the work is no longer reaching enough people to fulfil its intended purpose. I’ll continue to post, but less frequently, likely on weekends, and focused on updates, new discoveries or material worth highlighting. If you’d like to keep up with more regular updates: Instagram: instagram.com/stokenewington… Facebook: facebook.com/StokeNewington… Thank you to everyone who’s followed, replied, or shared stories over the years. Amir

Off to @PressAwardsuk. Where improbably I’ve been nominated as business journalist of the year. This involved me sitting in a Wetherspoons for 24hrs, eating lots of fried chicken and failing to get paid very well as a Deliveroo cyclist.

Digital restoration of 146 Stoke Newington Church Street to its original Georgian facade. Originally a residential property, the ground floor was converted into a shop at some point. An archival photo from 1880 shows what it originally looked like.

A proud moment for me -and my Mum when I received a certificate of appreciation for my campaign on osteoporosis in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen at Clarence House this week.
The Royal Family@RoyalFamily

Celebrating The Queen’s Award for Osteoporosis! 🦴 The Queen hosted a special reception at Clarence House for members of the community who are contributing to osteoporosis treatment and care. Previously known as The Duchess of Cornwall’s Award, Her Majesty presented the renamed award to Dr Nicola Peel, in recognition of her work to help improve the evaluation of people at risk of fractures. The Queen is President of the @RoyalOsteoSoc, the UK’s largest national charity for bone health, and has supported their work since 1994. 🫶 Thank you to everyone dedicated to supporting those with osteoporosis!
