Much of that denial is related to religious fanaticism. I know a wealthy, otherwise very well-educated guy, who even does mathematical modelling of various chemical behaviors, and despite this his deeply Christian beliefs makes him doubt all of this. If he doesn't feel God is involved in something as big as this, then it has to be impossible.
