It is intriguing to see how the post-KyoAni Naoko Yamada handles stories in which world religions are subtly woven into the plot, serving as a kind of thematic backdrop: Buddhism in Heike Monogatari, Christianity in Kimi no Iro, Islam in Tenmaku no Jaadugar.

@_kyacchi Yes, I saw in the comments to your video that it's Tantei Monogatari on the left. Do you doubt that Birdman is on the right?

@alynokioku The sooner you switch to Japanese texts, the better, but for now you can start with this
бриколёр@animbecile_94

Here my must-read list for those who really want to dive in the topic: Patrick Galbraith - 1) Otaku and the Struggle for Imagination in Japan, 2) Otaku encyclopedia, 3) Moe Manifesto 4) The Ethics of Affect Hiroki Azuma - Otaku: Japan's Database Animals Tamaki Saito - Beautiful Fighting Girl Debating Otaku in contemporary Japan. Historical perspectives and new horizons (collection of articles) Fandom Unbound: Otaku culture in a connected world (collection of articles) Marc Steinberg - Anime's Media Mix Sharon Kinsella - Adult Manga Mechademia articles After that, I think it's necessary to move on to Japanese sources, because so much important works hasn't been translated: Otaku Book (Otaku no Hon) - the first collection of articles dedicated to the various types of otaku. A Theory of Narrative Consumption (Monogatari shohiron), The Intellectual History of Otaku ― 1980s Theory (Otaku no seishinshi : 1980-nendairon) by Otsuka Eiji, a prominent critic and editor of manga magazine in 80s. Introduction to Otakuology (Otakugaku Nyuumon) by Gainax first President Toshio Okada (more like manifesto than academic work but still important book). Uno Tsunehiro - Imagination of the 2000s (Zero-nendai no sozoryoku) - excellent cultural analysis of the main trends in Japanese media in the 2000s. The Birth of the Pleasure City: Akihabara, the Moe City (Omomuki-to no tanjō: Moeru toshi Akihabara) by Morikawa Kaichiro about Akihabara phenomenon. Research on Otaku Girls: A Comprehensive System of Fujoshi Thought (Otaku joshi kenkyu) by Yumiko Sugiura - important work about otaku girls. In general, the more you study otaku, the more you realize that many things cannot be understood without studying the sociocultural context of post-war Japan, so reading books about that greatly expands your horizons and understanding of many phenomena.

Azuma's "database consumption" is an answer to Otsuka Eiji's "narrative consumption" concept. Azuma declared that the new gen otaku doesn't need even narratives. (There are some criticism like "Should it be called database consumption?" tho.)
日本かぶれクルー@The_Weeb_Crew

A lot of people are bringing up TV Tropes as a form of database consumption, but Azuma is particularly transfixed on the otaku database of moe elements. Booru websites would be a more appropriate comparison than TV Tropes imo.

@Shiroakai_ I'm not sure there's any point in reading Lamarr unless one is already immersed in the philosophy of technology and postmodern thought. This book is more for an advanced level.

Although I find the video a bit disjointed (themes of a lack of interest in history—and the need for deeper engagement—and of anime as a medium that inherently acts as a filter are not particularly well-integrated into the narrative flow) I wish there were more videos like this—ones where people share their own reflections and perspectives instead of simply recapping an anime while framing it through some concept they picked up elsewhere. It's refreshing to watch a video essay that actually feels like a video essay.

Kinda ridiculous how much Kenjiro Tsuda's voice feels so out of place in One Piece and comes across as strangely alien to its world.

It’s so strange to see how intensely some Japanese people still dwell on the persecution of otaku, often with a noticeable undertone of self-pity. There’s something ressentiment-driven about it. After all, that resistance to social pressure was part of what made otaku culture what it became. Without those hardships, much of its creative vitality might never have existed. It almost feels as if that subcultural impulse is beginning to fade.

@IchijyoRyu48322 If we’re talking specifically about this time period — and putting the classic AMVs aside like Skittles or Attack of The Otaku — this is the one that immediately comes to mind. Pretty solid dance AMV for 2008 youtube.com/watch?v=8OQNGc…

It’s kind of fascinating how Nadesico now feels both incredibly outdated and increasingly relevant at the same time. On one hand, a lot of it is hard to fully appreciate if you’re not familiar with classic mecha and space operas and like. On the other, its take on media, hyperfixation, and the political power of fictional imagery feels way more relatable now than it probably did in the late ’90s, especially considering how anime and manga imagery is now increasingly used to mobilize people and circulate all kinds of political agenda.

@study_of_swords Disliked his second book. It felt too superficial. Of course you can’t cover the entire history, but honestly, I expected more. The book on the origins of manga turned out much better.

A lot of people in the replies/QTs seem to be struggling with the idea that manga itself resulted from transcultural flows? Images unrelated. (read a book) Of course the term "comic" is also used in Japan to describe manga? Comiket (comic market)? Ladies Comics?

Eden Saent@saint_ed5n

So "manga" means comics by translation. The words are literally interchangeable when talking about the medium but also we can refer more to the style of the medium as well. With Manga denoting a style originating in Japan. So these are manga characters and it looks fun as hell.

@Ultrakyriel @The_Weeb_Crew It's not just a strong bias; Ootsuka Eiji outright lies about certain topics and omitted the accomplishments of his co-editor, Ogata Katsuhiro and attributed them to himself (my colleague interviewed him a couple years ago to get certain facts about the history straight).

Honestly I think almost every western fans of JP media should start with reading Otsuka's "Intellectual history of otakus" before they talk about otakus subculture in Japan. 『おたくの精神史 ―― 1980年代論 』The Intellectual History of Otaku
