CHAINSMOKER CAT OPENING WTF IS THIS OPENING 😭

Here my must-read list for those who really want to dive in the topic: Patrick Galbraith - 1) Otaku and the Struggle for Imagination in Japan, 2) Otaku encyclopedia, 3) Moe Manifesto 4) The Ethics of Affect Hiroki Azuma - Otaku: Japan's Database Animals Tamaki Saito - Beautiful Fighting Girl Debating Otaku in contemporary Japan. Historical perspectives and new horizons (collection of articles) Fandom Unbound: Otaku culture in a connected world (collection of articles) Marc Steinberg - Anime's Media Mix Sharon Kinsella - Adult Manga Mechademia articles After that, I think it's necessary to move on to Japanese sources, because so much important works hasn't been translated: Otaku Book (Otaku no Hon) - the first collection of articles dedicated to the various types of otaku. A Theory of Narrative Consumption (Monogatari shohiron), The Intellectual History of Otaku ― 1980s Theory (Otaku no seishinshi : 1980-nendairon) by Otsuka Eiji, a prominent critic and editor of manga magazine in 80s. Introduction to Otakuology (Otakugaku Nyuumon) by Gainax first President Toshio Okada (more like manifesto than academic work but still important book). Uno Tsunehiro - Imagination of the 2000s (Zero-nendai no sozoryoku) - excellent cultural analysis of the main trends in Japanese media in the 2000s. The Birth of the Pleasure City: Akihabara, the Moe City (Omomuki-to no tanjō: Moeru toshi Akihabara) by Morikawa Kaichiro about Akihabara phenomenon. Research on Otaku Girls: A Comprehensive System of Fujoshi Thought (Otaku joshi kenkyu) by Yumiko Sugiura - important work about otaku girls. In general, the more you study otaku, the more you realize that many things cannot be understood without studying the sociocultural context of post-war Japan, so reading books about that greatly expands your horizons and understanding of many phenomena.

A lot of people are bringing up TV Tropes as a form of database consumption, but Azuma is particularly transfixed on the otaku database of moe elements. Booru websites would be a more appropriate comparison than TV Tropes imo.

For anyone interested in getting a better understanding of the history of art & art theory, I'd recommend Ernst Gombrich as well worth reading. Similar to Cavell's writing on film, Gombrich has a very accessible style & clarity in outlining ideas & arguments. (Some books below)

So "manga" means comics by translation. The words are literally interchangeable when talking about the medium but also we can refer more to the style of the medium as well. With Manga denoting a style originating in Japan. So these are manga characters and it looks fun as hell.
