Mamata Banerjee’s unfortunate decision to force the TMC MP Yusuf Pathan to withdraw from the Government of India’s multi-party delegation is baffling. This move reeks of petty partisan politics at a time when the nation needs to stand united against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. A delegation representing India on a global stage is a matter of national pride, not a platform for political gamesmanship. TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee’s action sends a dangerous message that she and her party, are unwilling to unequivocally condemn terrorism, when it matters the most. If the TMC truly supports India’s anti-terrorism stance and Foreign Policy, why pull out their MP in the first place? This highlights their lack of commitment to national interest. The fact that other senior TMC MPs are now sending feelers to join the delegation further exposes the internal contradictions within their party. Mamata Banerjee’s leadership represents a dangerous brand of politics that puts regional and personal interests above the nation and her refusal to take a firm stand against terrorism only emboldens anti-national elements.
