This speech is full of half-truths, distortions, misleading claims and outright lies. Basically living up to every meme, trope and unfair stereotype, of Americans being ignorant morons. I'll go through each of the claims he made in this segment and what the actual facts are. /1

@Ryan_Posselt Surely Minister Abetz wouldn’t make such a foolish statement? If he was he must produce the advice from the transport experts from his department saying this. I’ve heard that many in his department are very concerned about ignoring advice & the direction being taken.

I keep copping blame for traffic congestion from Eric despite him being responsible for Macquarie, Davey, Brooker, Tasman bridge, the outlet and public transport. The media so focused on Collins street yet do minimal reporting on traffic snarls the state is responsible for!

Why is @EricAbetzMP so obsessed with two blocks of bike lane on Collins street? Because culture wars. Why isn’t he focussed on fixing the roads he is responsible for? When will he invest in upgrading the Domain Highway, Brooker Highway interchange? #politas

Tassie's most overlooked road rule. If you're turning at an intersection while driving or riding, you must give way to pedestrians crossing the road. From the Road Safety Advisory Council (rsac.tas.gov.au)

It's not really about whether you personally like, want or need to drive. It’s about not being DEPENDENT on driving all the time, for everything you do. And it’s about the fact that in cities, if everyone has to move by car, no one moves much at all. Pic via @BrooklynSpoke

@hobartstreets Thanks! Article says that state govt promised $20 million to build terminals in same 3 locations that the Councils are already building! We are rolling these 3 out with $20 million from federal govt. Better for state to spend $20 million on new services & a Kington terminal

Hello @EricAbetzMP Curious to know if the real time bus information is being rolled out this month as promised? Knowing that my @metro_tasmania bus was delayed would have been very helpful this morning! #politas

@jdevine1974 @cityofhobarttas @Ryan_Posselt @fontpr Hi Justin, it’s a ‘new’ water fountain so it’s operational but the water line being tested for compliance with standards. Possibly an issue with water supply & quality in the wharf area generally? staff are on to it, but I agree that we need to wrap this up, get it open !

The government boasts that emissions are now 28.2% below 2005 levels. Sounds great, except that is only when you include the very dodgy "emissions" from land clearing and land use (there was massive land clearing in 2005). The fall of "actual emissions" is a mere 1.8%.

@burgess_steven @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart snappy lines Steve, but they’re just a bit light weight & lacking much in the way of evidence. How can a 98% development approval rate be categorised as ‘dog whistling’ when it’s actually a fact? Dog whistling is a nasty term often linked to ills such as racism 🫢

@AnnaReyno @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart Every single city is a competitor. The approval rate is a dog whistling distraction. And we are circling back to my original point, local government sitting in its hands blaming the state.

I understand LegCo has voted down the Deals for Developer mates Legislation for Development Assessment Panels. It was bad legislation not supported by any council in Tasmania, not even supported by @YIMBYHobart Thanks to those in LegCo who understood this. #politas

@burgess_steven @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart Which national / international competitor are you thinking of? We do have the fastest statutory planning approvals in the country Our strategic planning is lacking because of no planning department in state govt

@AnnaReyno @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart To be fair the antiquated planning regime is also a secondary factor, but I’m still cranky everyone is pretending it is the best it can be when it is so far behind our national and international competitors.

@burgess_steven @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart My advice is that the bigger experienced national developers (eg lend lease, Mirvac) aren’t here because we’re not a big enough market. A key factor is the shallowness of our economy - too much focus on tourism, not enough on other things

@AnnaReyno @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart It’s not easy for anybody. It’s super competitive, what are we doing to be the destination of choice? If they aren’t scared (Maybe put-off is a more grown up phrase) why aren’t they all here? That 650 number needs to be about 2500 (at least) and that is just attached dwellings

@burgess_steven @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart Developers aren’t scared. They have 98% approval rate. Tasmanian developers aren’t interested in or experienced at medium density & they think the community don’t want it. Attracting different developers & builders to a small island state is not an easy task

@AnnaReyno @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart They always are, every where. The approvals are getting built at the right rate. But 30 years of scaring off developers (ghosts of Xmas past to be sure) is keeping the quality medium density developers away. And every detached house we build, our problem (ironically) gets worse

@burgess_steven @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart Is that a planning or building problem? Or a housing finance and affordability problem? In Hobart we’ve approved about 650 apartments across 20 projects and they’re not getting built. Approvals are well above starts / completions 🤷‍♀️

@AnnaReyno @Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart Well my personal ones are a bit irrelevant, but the data shows that we are not delivering anywhere near enough dense car free housing and instead building houses most people cant afford, or in places people can’t get to jobs or services. It’s not ok.

@Ryan_Posselt @YIMBYHobart It was clumsy legislation, but somebody has to radically change our land use planning regime. Council’s can’t do it without state changing the rules. If they are doing it incorrectly, show them a better idea.

Same comments apply to this. No wonder our state has numeracy issues when a sample so small that it doesn't even provide statistical confidence that opposition exceeds support is being mislabelled as a "clear message". Make it stop! #politas twitter.com/RockliffTeam/s…

EMRS Collins St bike lane commissioned Q, if this is correct that n=only 92 then the tiny sample size and the fact that there were some prior contentious questions about councils renders this absolutely useless. #politas
