DFD responded to a 5-alarm fire last night at an apartment complex under construction. 156 firefighters battled heavy fire conditions. Cause under investigation. We greatly appreciate the support from South Metro Fire Rescue, Aurora Fire Rescue, and the Denver PD.

We are preparing for critical fire weather and elevated wildfire risk in Colorado on Monday. Evolving weather forecasts from Sunday for Monday include very high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation. As a public safety measure to prevent wildfires, we are evaluating the potential need to proactively turn off power for customers in Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and eastern Denver counties, starting on Monday, Oct. 20, at around 11 a.m. Temporarily shutting off power – known as a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) – is not a step taken lightly and is only used when other methods are not enough to help prevent wildfires. Happening Now 10/10 at 12:40pm: Single car crash on I-70 East at mm 241. Express lane and left lane are blocked. After the crash, a stolen vehicle struck an Idaho Springs Police vehicle that was on scene of the initial crash. The stolen vehicle is a Clear Creek County Roundabout shuttle bus (see photo for vehicle description). The stolen shuttle bus did not stop and is currently being sought by law enforcement. If seen, please call 9-1-1. No injuries were reported with either crash.

This morning at 7:12 a.m., Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of shoplifting at the Walmart located at 10900 E. Briarwood Avenue. The report indicated the individual involved was armed with a machete. When deputies contacted the subject, he advanced toward deputies with both a knife and a machete. A deputy deployed a Taser, which was ineffective. As the subject continued to advance, another deputy discharged their firearm, striking the subject. Immediately, deputies began life-saving efforts. The subject was pronounced deceased once medical personnel arrived at the scene. This is an active and ongoing investigation. As with any deputy-involved shooting, the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team has been activated as part of the investigation. Additional information will be released when available.

Some bittersweet news to share: today is my last day at WGME. I’m so thankful for everything the past two years have brought me, and I couldn’t be more grateful that I got a chance to call Portland home. Thanks to all who shared their stories with me, and welcomed me to Maine!♥️
