There I was thinking I'd already done the last gig of the season! Huge thanks to @capella_krk for a surprise final concert of the year. Total pleasure to wrap up 2024 with some Haydn Symphonies (including the splendid number 72 replete with four horns).

I was (all to briefly) in my home town of Birmingham recently for a concert and spotted a stall at their “German Market” selling all manner of “horns”. Had to get one to add to my collection!

Whilst it may not appear very "seasonable" to be releasing this new video today - the first performance of the earliest version of this song (a version entitled "Le Paysan breton") was on this very day in 1833! m.youtube.com/watch?v=GJrAEy…

Having with a room full of researchers, specialists in 19th century singing and instrumental playing, was a great opportunity to workshop many ideas. I hope I showed them just a bit of the expressive things we can do on horns of this era.

I was joined by the absolute powerhouse of a musician and human being that is soprano Anna Fraser, as well as pianist Tzu-Yu Yang who joined us, bringing so much expressivity and flexibility to the party…

The reason I’m in Vienna! It's a little bit of a geographical detour from my research into timbre and portamento on the horn during the 19th century (as I'm mostly focusing on French repertoire) but it was a real treat to present my thoughts on Schubert's song "Auf dem Strom" …
