I am an editor-in-chief for an open-access journal. A submitted paper had a reviewer that contacted the author and asked for cash in return for a favorable review. Thanks to the author for calling this to our attention. #publishing #ethics

@harish77 @moorejh this would be then double anonymized peer review model which has been shown to mitigate bias... but most journals don't use that model...

@askdheeraj @moorejh this would be a single anonymized model presumably where the reviewer could see who the author was... and breaching ethical norms/policy was by eliminating the confidentiality by informing the author of his identity...and then asking for money!

@moorejh can the reviewer be flagged to other editors as unethical across the discipline's journals?

The big publishers did not popularize the APC model. Most publishers, big and small, thought it was dangerous. Pieces like this editorial are misrepresenting the history of what actually happened.

@lisalibrarian I don't understand eliminate subscription value....that was what APCs did. The tech, the work, the expertise across all phases of publication lifecycle has value & costs. Another nudge? Eliminating research publication from professional eval. and funding.

All it would take to flip journals to OA is a concentrated investment to eliminate subscription value ... at this point it almost feels like that would have cost less than what has been spent trying to nudge the system. But, of course, the money is where it is in the system.
Richard Sever@cshperspectives

"OA has progressed slower than many would have liked because most academics don’t really care...mandates from funders created much of the progress...author[s] put things like speed, journal prestige and impact factor ahead of whether a journal is OA" journalology.ck.page/posts/journalo…

I think #SSP2024 did it right. Not only hybrid option but also some virtual-first/only programming. Ppl in certain quarters love to hate on SSP but they've never gone back to in-person only...
Martin Paul Eve@martin_eve

I think it's really disappointing that conferences about the future of scholarly communications are going "in-person only" in 2024. I cannot travel as I need haemodialysis every 48 hours. Without any remote participation, I am effectively excluded by disability.

Publishers are left with a cancelled check as funders who demanded journals flip to OA now pull support for the APC model, Gates makes a “U”-turn to preprints, and evaluating publisher partnerships is complex it turns out. This month's issue of The Brief: ce-strategy.com/the-brief/canc…
