In advance of the Wild and Windy weather I wassailed the old apple tree in the garden, on frozen ground which crunched underfoot, with remnants of snow all around, as my breath steamed in the air … with verse, drum, candle flame, incense, cider and birdseed #SmallBeautiesHour
@autisticgardner@wildernorfolk Actually, in some cases, Latin would be useful anyway - a single colloquial name can sometimes be used across a number of species between different areas so at least the Latin name gives a definitive species identification that came be recognised around the world.
A pal has been away on a course..
‘The younger professional Ecologists all knew everything there was to know about BNG, credits, trading etc but couldn't ID a beech tree, not one of them out of 17’.
@wildernorfolk That is shocking. They should at least be able to identify a basic range of trees and plants and be able to use a key and book in the identification of others. We are becoming ever more disconnected with nature, some of these trees should be known from even an urban childhood.
@tyhebenw Ha! That doesn’t surprise me. And I love sweet and sour sauce with pineapple, so easy to make too - just tomato ketchup, cornflour, vinegar and sugar! Actually, has anyone made a sweet and sour pizza?
@autisticgardner Oooh! I’ve sown some bellis already, they put on a fantastic show this year in the garden and are still flowering, and I must sow some wallflowers, they are one of OH’s favourites and ours are a number of years old now and very leggy
