Public elevators are under appreciated public transport. The Barrakka lift in Valetta rises 58m, linking the ferry and cruise terminal to the bus station and centre of the old town. The twin lifts can move 800 people an hour each way, and stairs if you’re game for 19 storeys.

@SJPONeill @thefutureisrail @svdweerden And I drive that road often, rough isnt it?! But may surprise you to know that Intercity already have a daily service on that road, so it's a corridor with existing demand.

@SJPONeill @thefutureisrail @svdweerden thanks Simon - Taupo can use more work for sure. For now, this is the way NZR ran buses in 70s. Whanganui-Ohakune allows Whanganui people to travel North with a transfer at Ohakune (faster than Marton)

This week, I presented to the Horizons RTC about the value of a connected regional PT network. @svdweerden and I produced some concept maps to show what this could look like by bus in the near future, as well as with later rail stages. Submit by 11 Sep at haveyoursay.horizons.govt.nz

Fantastic to see an expert lens on Connect (Horizons Regional Transport's) regional public transport review, joining brilliant writing on the likes of Perth, L.A and Victoria PT networks. You can submit on Horizons' review at haveyoursay.horizons.govt.nz

Huzzah for six months of Te Ngaru The Tide, and our busiest ever month in June! The Tide alone had 6470 riders, which is more than the entire Whanganui urban network last June (6073). The full urban numbers were up 101% against last year at 12208.

Great news for Te Ngaru The Tide - Whanganui's new frequent bus service. This March, Whanganui saw an 86% increase in urban public transport trips compared to last March 2022. 45.4% of that patronage has come from The Tide. nzherald.co.nz/whanganui-chro…

There's every reason regional cities can have great PT and a broad market of users. The Tide is aiming to reach everyone. There's much more to do, but this is a great start.
