PRESS STATEMENT January 6, 2024 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Subject: Condemnation of the Attack on Journalists at Kettle House Bar and Grill As the elected Member of the Nairobi County Assembly representing Kileleshwa Ward, I am deeply troubled and vehemently condemn the recent violent incident at Kettle House Bar and Grill. The attack on journalists, who were accompanying law enforcement officials during a Shisha raid, is not only unacceptable but also a blatant violation of media freedom and personal safety. Journalists play a crucial role in our society, providing vital information and holding entities accountable. Their protection is paramount. The aggression displayed by the security guards and bouncers at Kettle House Bar and Grill towards these media practitioners is a direct attack on the freedom of press and expression. In light of this, I am calling for the immediate and thorough investigation of this incident by the police, led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and other relevant agencies. It is imperative that all those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice. This investigation must be swift and transparent to ensure that such incidents do not recur. Furthermore, I urge the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) and the police to enforce the law using legal and non-violent means. The prohibition of Shisha smoking is a public health issue and should be addressed within the confines of the law, respecting the rights and safety of all involved. The safety of media practitioners must be a priority. They should be able to perform their duties without fear of violence or intimidation. I stand in solidarity with the injured journalists and those who had their equipment damaged. Such acts of violence have no place in our society, especially against those who are the voice of the people. I will be closely monitoring the progress of the investigation and will advocate for the implementation of measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Kettle House Bar and Grill incident is a reminder that we must all work together to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights and safety of everyone in our community. I once applied for a job somewhere in this city. The CEO invited me over for the interview at Java; around Midday.
