Patterns of high-performing #design teams: Conceptual design: User interactions focused on user cognition, emotions AND behaviour Detail design: Increasingly specific user data w focus on implementation Mediocre teams: focus on user behavior only & fail to move to implementation

We had the pleasure of hosting 2 of our researchers’ doctoral defences this week already! @anttisurmis presented his work on empathic understanding & action in #design, paving the way for creating solutions that are better able to meet user needs #empathy @AaltoENG @AaltoResearch

Designers can't understand users as accurately as they think. In our preliminary @AaltoDF experiment, self-reported understanding after user interviews averaged at ~80%, while actual outcomes showed <50% of user thoughts and feelings accurately identified! #empathy #idetc

While this finding is preliminary, if it holds water in follow-ups, it bears some serious consequences for design thinking, which fosters an (ingenuous?) belief in designers' emphatic abilities.

@JeppeKM @oulasvirta At least in understanding others, yes. It's still good to confirm that the same happens in a specific context, though in the future it'll be more interesting to compare results between e.g. different designers. Aggregate trends also help evaluate the method's validity.

@engineer4change We can't conclude that based on this pilot, but other research says people who know each other score better at this 'mind reading' experiment than strangers.

@dingstweets @oulasvirta 2/2 The one designer in the pilot had 13 yrs of experience in industry & research. Will be happy to share the method and results with you once we get there! Figuring out what is 'enough' is one of our big questions.

@dingstweets @oulasvirta 1/2 All fantastic questions! We've compromised a little with the task to enable physiological monitoring etc., so its only a 30min interview with a product present. Afterwards, the designer synthesizes needs and users review them, but these %s are from right after the interview.

@imrichvalach @AaltoDF Unfortunately, our journal paper is still under review. But you can check the empathic accuracy work done by William Ickes for details on the type of experiment we did!

@anttisurmis @AaltoDF Can you share the research article? How did you decide for the thresholds between different thoughts and feelings?

@oulasvirta Great point! However, the designer's score of ~50% was higher than that of average Joes & Jills discussing general life events (~25%). So, while people are not great at reading minds in general, designers may be better at it or their context was easier. Needs more research though
