𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐮: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟒 – 𝐑𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐚 The story of Hiriparamma Ravichutta is etched on a rare hero stone found in Sakalavara, Anekal Taluk. Dating back to the 8th Century CE (during the reign of the Western Ganga King Sripurusha), this inscription is a remarkable record of courage from our region's early history. The hero stone commemorates the death of Ravichutta, who sacrificed his life in a brave fight with a tiger—an event recorded as a Hulibete (tiger hunt). What makes this find truly special is that it appears to be one of the earliest known Hulibete hero stones with an inscription found in Karnataka. While many hero stones show tiger hunts, those with written details are very rare. Out of more than 7,000 inscriptions documented in the Epigraphia Carnatica across districts like Bangalore, Kolar, Tumkur, Mysore, and Shimoga, only 17 Hulibete hero stones with inscriptions have been recorded. Ravichutta’s sacrifice reminds us that protecting the community from wild animals was an act of supreme bravery. His story adds another important chapter to the long and diverse history of the Bengaluru region. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸ್ಥಳನಾಮಗಳ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಗಳು: ಭಾಗ 18 – ಟಿ.ದಾಸರಹಳ್ಳಿ ಟಿ.ದಾಸರಹಳ್ಳಿಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು-ತುಮಕೂರು ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಒಂದು ಜನನಿಬಿಡ ಪ್ರದೇಶವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ನಗರದ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನಗಳು ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವು ಸಾ.ಶ.800ರ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು, ಇವುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು 'ಇನ್ಜತೂರು' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಟಿ.ದಾಸರಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಕಿರೀಟಪ್ರಾಯದಂತಿದ್ದು, 8ನೇ ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೂ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಟಿ.ದಾಸರಹಳ್ಳಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನವಸತಿ ಇತ್ತೆಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಂತಿವೆ. ಟಿ.ದಾಸರಹಳ್ಳಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ಆಧುನಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಮಹಾನಗರದ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ, ಇದರ ಇತಿಹಾಸವು ಕನಿಷ್ಠ 1200 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನವಾದುದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬಂದಿರುವ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು 'ತುರುಗೋಳ್' ಎಂಬ ಕಾಳಗವನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ತುರುಗೋಳ್‌ ಎಂದರೆ, ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ದನ-ಕರುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳ್ಳರು ಕದಿಯಲು ಬಂದಂತಹ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರು (ವೀರರು) ಹೋರಾಡಿ, ಗೋವುಗಳನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ ವೀರ ಮರಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಹಾಕಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಎಂದರ್ಥ. ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೋವು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸಂಪತ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಿಸುವ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಆಗಿಂದಾಗ್ಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಅಂತಹ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ವೀರರು ಶೌರ್ಯದಿಂದ ಹೋರಾಡಿ, ಮಡಿದ ವಿವರಗಳನ್ನು ಈ ತುರುಗೋಳ್ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಟಿ.ದಾಸರಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಎರಡೂ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಒಂದೇ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು 'ಕೋಸಿಗರಮಳ್ತ ಗುರಾಮರೆಯನು' ಇನ್ಜತೂರಿನ ಗೋವುಗಳನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ವೀರ ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು 'ಮಾರಸಿಂಗ' ಎಂಬಾತನು ಇನ್ಜತೂರಿನ 'ಊರಳಿವು' ಹಾಗೂ ಗೋವುಗಳನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. Earliest Records of Locality Names in Bengaluru: Part 18 – T. Dasarahalli 🕰📜 T. Dasarahalli, a busy area on the Bengaluru-Tumkur highway, holds some of the oldest records of our city's history. Two hero stones with inscriptions found here, date back to 800 CE. In these ancient records, the place is called 'Injatur,' proving that people were living here as far back as the 9th century. Even though the area is now a modern urban hub, its history goes back more than 1,200 years. The region is famous for its 'Turugol' (cattle raid) hero stones. These stones are important because they mention the locality’s name and tell stories of how local people bravely protected their cattle, which was their main wealth at the time. One record is the Kosigaramalta Guramareya hero stone from around 800 CE. It honors Guramareya, a brave man who died while defending the cattle from a raid. Another record shows that Marasinga sacrificed his life in a cattle raid while also defending his town. This hero stone describes the event as both a cattle raid and an 'Uralivu,' which refers to an attack on the village or town. These inscriptions explain how local heroes gave up their lives for their community. These stones were set up as a mark of respect to make sure their story was never forgotten. Today, 3D digital scans of these stones clearly show the name 'Injatur,' connecting this ancient village to the modern T. Dasarahalli we live in today. Ancient Heroes of Bengaluru: Part 5 – Puniseyamma The story of Puniseyamma is found on a rare 9th-century hero stone in the village of Marasur Madivala, Anekal Taluk. This is a valuable record from our region's early history, dating back to the Western Ganga period. The inscription records the death of Puniseyamma Gamunda, who was likely a local leader. While the exact details of the battle are worn out, his name has been preserved for over a thousand years, connecting us to the people who sacrificed their lives for their land. Marasur Madivala is a locality filled with heritage. Along with Puniseyamma's stone, a second hero stone was found here dating to the 10th century CE. It depicts a hero named Irivabedenga—a title used for an expert warrior—holding a bow in one hand and a dagger in the other. This inscription mentions the Ganga King Butuga II (who ruled between 938–961 CE). However, the text is worn out, and its full context cannot be decoded. Beyond these two hero stones, Marasur Madivala is home to the ancient Someshwara Temple and a very detailed Chamundi sculpture, both dating back to the 10th century. Together, these sites make Marasur Madivala an essential stop for anyone interested in the 9th and 10th-century history of Bengaluru. Buddha Purnima at the Mythic Society: A Week with the Library's Buddhist Collection The Mythic Society of Bengaluru holds 948 books on the Buddha and Buddhism in its library, acquired across more than a century — the oldest dating to 1852 (Henry T. Prinsep's account of Buddhism as practised in Tibet, Tartary and Mongolia). A curated selection is on display this Buddha Purnima week. The shelves span the canonical and the contemporary: the Dhammapada and Pali suttas, the Mahavamsa and Nagarjuna's Madhyamakasastram, studies of Ashoka's edicts, monographs on Sanchi, Ajanta, Nalanda and Bodh Gaya, Tibetan philosophical writing, and modern scholarship reaching up to the present year. To mark the occasion, the Mythic Society of Bengaluru is opening a two-day display drawn from the more than 120 books our library holds on Tipu Sultan and the Anglo-Mysore Wars. The oldest book on display is from 1793 — Fall of Tipu Sultan (Original Record), published while Tipu was still alive — alongside Major Dirom's Narrative of the Campaign and Mackenzie's Sketch of the War with Tippoo Sultan, both also from 1793. From there the collection moves through William Kirkpatrick's 1811 Select Letters of Tippoo Sultan, Charles Philip Brown's 1849 Memoirs of Hyder and Tippoo, the standard academic biographies of Mohibbul Hasan Khan (1951) and Sheikh Ali (1972), the Suman Venkatesh translation of Correspondence of the French during the reign of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (1998), J. R. Henderson's Coins of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, and several Kannada works including Pratap Simha's Tippu Sultana — Swatantrya Veeranaa? (2013) and Sandeep Balakrishna's Tipu Sultan (2013), down to Vikram Sampath's biography of 2024. The display brings together primary sources, contemporary military accounts, scholarly biographies, regional histories, and contesting voices — both admiring and critical — on one table. Earliest Records of Locality Names in Bengaluru: Part 19 – Malleshwaram 🕰📜 Malleshwaram, one of Bengaluru’s most iconic cultural hubs, has deep historical roots going back many centuries. While the area is known today for its heritage homes and temples, ancient inscriptions tell the story of a place once called ‘Mallapura’ (meaning the town on the hill). A significant record from 1669 CE, found near the Kadu Mallikarjuna Temple, highlights the city's Maratha connection. This Kannada inscription records a land grant by Ekoji I (also known as Venkoji), the half-brother of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It marks the donation of the village Medaraninganahalli to the Mallapura Mallikarjuna Temple. The inscription is historically important for several reasons: 1) This inscription confirms that 'Mallapura' was the original name of modern-day Malleshwaram. 2) This inscription is the earliest inscription in the Bengaluru region to explicitly mention Muslims. 3) This insription provides clear evidence of Maratha administration in Bengaluru during the 17th century. The village mentioned in the grant, Medaraninganahalli, no longer exists today. Its lands were later acquired to build the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus. Interestingly, a much older 10th-century 'Hulibete' (tiger hunt) hero stone was also found on the IISc grounds, proving that people have been living in this area since ancient times. Through 3D digital scanning of inscriptions by the Mythic Society, these stories of royal grants and ancient heroes are being preserved, connecting the 'Mallapura' of the past to the vibrant Malleshwaram we know today. TAGORE AT THE MYTHIC SOCIETY: 107 YEARS AGO, IN THE DALY HALL On 9 March 1919, at 5:30 in the evening, Rabindranath Tagore lectured at the Mythic Society's Daly Memorial Hall on the Folk-Religions of India. He drew on the Bauls of Bengal as his central example. The Mythic Society's Bengaluru Inscriptions 3D Digital Conservation Project team was recently honoured to host two of India's most respected archaeologists. Prof. Vasant Shinde — former Vice-Chancellor of Deccan College, founding Director General of the National Maritime Heritage Complex, and a CSIR Bhatnagar Fellow at CCMB, Hyderabad — is a distinguished archaeologist known for his work on the Indus Valley Civilization, particularly the Rakhigarhi excavations and the landmark archaeogenetic research that followed. During his visit to our lab, he looked closely at our 3D digital conservation methods and spoke highly of the scale of the project and the technology we are deploying. We also welcomed Dr. K. K. Muhammed, former Regional Director (North) of the Archaeological Survey of India. Dr. Muhammed is widely known for his role in the 1976–77 Ayodhya excavations under Prof. B. B. Lal, and for the restoration of major heritage sites including the Bateshwar temple complex in Morena, as well as the Dantewada and Bhojeshwar temples. He spent time with our team and showed keen interest in our digital approach to heritage conservation. A special moment during the visit was the demonstration of our Aksharabhandara software. Both guests were delighted to see their names rendered in ancient Kannada script — a vivid illustration of how our heritage can be preserved and reanimated through modern technology. 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐮: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟔 – 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐞 The story of Tondabbe is recorded on a unique 900 CE inscription found on a pillar at the entrance of the Begur fort. This is a rare and important record, as it is one of the very few inscriptions documented in Bengaluru belonging to the Jaina tradition. The inscription commemorates Tondabbe, the daughter of Nagatara, a powerful local chieftain of Begur. It records her death through the ritual of Sanyasana (fasting unto death)—a sacred practice in Jain philosophy toward liberation. Among the 48 types of death identified in Jain tradition, Tondabbe’s path is considered pandita-panditamaraṇa—the wisest of wise deaths—which offers complete release from the cycle of rebirth. By first renouncing her home and then attaining samadhi through the gradual giving up of food and bodily attachments, she sought a wise and spiritual end. The pillar itself features a beautiful sculpture of Tondabbe seated in a meditative padmasana posture, with two smaller figures, likely attendants, by her side. Interestingly, history suggests a unique blend of faiths within her family. While Tondabbe followed Jainism, a corresponding hero stone found at the Begur Panchalingeshwara temple possibly suggests her husband may have been a follower of Hinduism. This gives us a glimpse into the diverse religious landscape of 10th-century Begur. Today, the pillar at the fort entrance stands as a quiet witness to Tondabbe’s spiritual journey from over a thousand years ago. Its earliest known mentions appear in the 1431CE Kannada inscription, where the place is called Virupakshapura. The name "Kodigehalli" comes from the words kodige (grant) and halli (village), referring to a land grant recorded in the inscription found here. Over time, Kodigehalli became the main name, replacing the older name Virupakshapura, although a locality named Virupakshapura still exists within modern Kodigehalli today. The 1431 CE Prataparaya inscription near Halekote Anjaneyaswamy Temple records Virupakshapura (modern-day Kodigehalli) as a part of Devasamudra village, within the Yelahanka Nadu of the Shivanasamudra (Hesaraghatta) region under the Karnataka Empire.
