Dear friends and colleagues, It is with overwhelming sadness that we share news of the death of our colleague, mentor and friend, Rinaldo Bellomo. During recent days, both he and his family have received dedicated, expert and compassionate care from some of the finest in our ICU community. We share their pain and sense of loss. Over several decades, Rinaldo has made a profound and enduring impact on ICU practice in Australia, New Zealand and around the world. As a passionate researcher he challenged conventions, championed evidence-based practice in the care of the critically ill and supported countless colleagues in their research careers. As a compassionate mentor, colleague and friend, he touched and enriched numerous lives, and will be greatly missed. His loss will affect our whole community and in due course there will be opportunities to come together to celebrate his life. This will be a difficult time for many, but we know that our memories of Rinaldo’s relentless enthusiasm, warmth, optimism and boundless energy will help us all through the weeks ahead. In lieu of flowers, Rinaldo's family would welcome donations to support his research legacy at …lth-community-fundraising.raisely.com/inmem-rinaldo-… Our sincere condolences and best wishes go out to his family, friends and colleagues. Craig Carr, on behalf of the ANZICS community

“𝟮𝟱% 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱” Last year, only 25% of ICU consultants were women. The 𝗔𝗡𝗭𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 (𝗪𝗜𝗡) 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 has set a new strategy whereby Australian and New Zealand intensive care medicine inspires, supports, and retains the best women doctors. This strategy not only intends to increase the number of women consultants but also to improve their experience. With our intensive care community, the strategy will: 🟣Realize stronger processes to support increasing the number of women ICU consultants 🟣Create greater visibility of the number of women ICU consultants and trainees 🟣Create a training environment which attracts women to undertake ICU training 🟣Create a working environment which supports women ICU trainees and consultants 🟣Create a strong communication strategy for Women in Intensive Care Medicine On #IWD2026, ANZICS WIN acknowledges that fostering generous support and meaningful opportunities contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of women in intensive care medicine. Giving is not a subtraction — it's intentional multiplication. When women thrive, we all rise. #IWD2026 #GiveToGain #ANZICS #ANZICSWIN #WIN #ICU

𝗔𝗡𝗭𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Hot off the press, the ANZICS Guidelines on Patient and Family Engagement in Critical Care Research and Registries launched at the Noosa CTG conference yesterday. We hope the information presented in these guidelines will help clinicians, researchers, and educators in their approach to patient and family engagement. We thank the many people who contributed to delivering these guidelines for our binational community. Here is a potential consumer quote from the guidelines: ‘To all researchers, I extend this challenge: be as brave and vulnerable in your engagement as those who survive a critical care experience. We entrust you with our stories and our scars. Your task is to meet that courage with humility, curiosity, and commitment. If we do so together, research will not only generate knowledge - it will foster trust, equity, and healing.’ Belinda MacLeod-Smith (ICU caregiver). 🧡𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲 | 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 Cancer is a major cause of illness in Australia, and patients with a diagnosis of cancer have numerous interactions with health care services, from pre diagnosis to post treatment phases of their illness. This may include the development of critical illness requiring ICU admission, 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝟏 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫. In particular, we hope to describe the 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 of this patient group. This is an area where there is currently little research but has been highlighted as a 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. We are using information from 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, including the 𝐀𝐍𝐙𝐈𝐂𝐒 𝐀𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞, to compare outcomes of patients with and without a diagnosis of cancer admitted to ICU in Victoria over a five-year period. We believe the results of this study will more accurately inform clinicians and patients about the journey and outcomes of this group in order to provide best quality care to this vulnerable group. 🧡𝐎𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.
