Last week, the current leadership of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), the national policy voice for South Asian Americans for the last 24 years, decided to throw away decades of hard work. The reality is, you can toss the container, but the spirit and substance of SAALT lives on. It shines through the work, through the archives, and in all of us who worked with SAALT and carry forward its mission and its vision. The indomitable spirit of SAALT's foundation is reflected in the lives of those protected by the work of former SAALT staff and leadership. A million sunsets could not eclipse the power of the SAALT community, because we are building again, together. Please read the full statement here: bit.ly/SouthAsianStat… Onward!

Very sad to see this happen. Throughout the years SAALT has always been one of the more reliable and trustworthy partners across many issues. A very important entity and voice.

Thank you to everyone at SAALT for your tireless work. SAALT’s legacy was born out of the struggle in the post-9/11 world and was about building institutions to support each other. It’s heartbreaking to see SAALT go, especially now, when we face policies that harm us and violent rhetoric that criminalizes our communities. SAALT’s work is needed now more than ever.

I’m one of 50+ South Asian advocates who’ve signed a statement expressing sadness & frustration that SAALT, a national advocacy organization, is shutting down. Many of us remain committed to the work & will continue the fight to protect our communities. bit.ly/SouthAsianStat…

Solidarity in a post-#September11 America asks us to acknowledge the pain & injustice inflicted on Arab, Muslim, Sikh & South Asian communities; to build relationships beyond our identity groups; to commit to our collective movement for justice. AALT ✍️ 9-11solidaritystatement.carrd.co

It’s been a year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Since then, 14 states have banned most abortions, leaving millions of women and girls with nowhere to turn for the care they need.   And yet, there are reasons to hope.  After Roe v. Wade was overturned, voters in Michigan, California, and Vermont helped enshrine abortion rights in their state constitutions. And governors in states like Nevada, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania have signed executive orders to protect abortion access.

In this moment of grief and anger, we also remain firm in our resolve to work in solidarity with others to tackle the root causes of such horrific violence, end the gun violence epidemic, and create safer communities for all.

Asian communities in Seattle & beyond are hurting. Once again, people simply going about their day have been gunned down. This fear & pain feel much too familiar, especially as we continue to heal from this year’s shootings in Monterey Park, Half Moon Bay, and Allen.

We are shocked and devastated by the shooting in Seattle this week that took the life of a pregnant Korean American woman, Eina Kwon, and her baby. Our deepest condolences go out to her loved ones, including her injured husband, and the Seattle community. bit.ly/3Xae38m

I better not hear about any “thoughts and prayers” coming from any Georgia Republican lawmakers about the shooting in Midtown today. Last year, we told you that people would be hurt and you all still passed a bill allowing permitless carry of a concealed handgun in public.
