If we treated race relations like cyclists: "Due to a spate of lynchings, it has come to our attention that Negroes are no longer safe in white society. Henceforth, they will be confined to small, specially-built ghettos. Further, to further prevent lynchings ...

@s70gad The attitude of them is something else. Personally if they refuse to use infustructure provided for them the the close pass rule should not apply.

There is a valuable lesson to be learned here— people with very little impulse control end up limited to a certain subset of jobs while people who can learn to understand social norms of their environment & have self control can advance further. Children see this as “being fake”

@cityaestheticss Hint: most modern research on "cycling infrastructure" is not competent because there is rarely any attempt to control for speed. Since cyclists in cycle lanes almost always travel more slowly than those in the road, such "studies" are comparing apples to oranges.

The prominent American Jewish professor Norman Finkelstein made a striking statement: “The only country supporting weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East is Israel.” “Iran and all other Middle Eastern countries have agreed to establish a region free of weapons of mass destruction. The only country preventing this? Israel.” “The only country that refuses to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty? Once again, Israel.” “So, who is really preventing peace in the Middle East? The answer is clear.”

Iran: responds to illegal US strike World: "THIS IS ESCALATION! UNACCEPTABLE!" US: illegally strikes Iran first World: "We urge restraint... on Iran." The restraint: always demanded from the victim. Never from the aggressor

@patrickdichter Maybe they should give the employees access to the books. I had that, just as part of the point-of-sale system, in one of my jobs. No joke, the owner was raking in millions, while he paid his employees peanuts.

I felt this video. Most employees have no idea how expensive it is to keep the business running. And most think every owner is making huge profits when they’re often scraping by.

Let me tell you as briefly as possible about israel's "Samson option" & then you tell me if you still support them (btw you can google this yourself if you don't trust me) "Samson option" means that if israel is going down, they plan to use nukes & attack as many countries as possible to maximize the damage & take as many people with them as possible. That means they plan to nuke targets in European countries, too. You may think: "Ok, if someone attacks them 1st, they have the right to defend themselves." Well, this plan makes it clear that if the European countries don't SUPPORT israel or stay NEUTRAL while israel is fighting a war, they'll nuke them too. Even though they've done nothing wrong. It's a "if we're going down, then we'll take as many of you with us as possible" mentality. And then someone will look you dead in the eyes & say that "israel is our great ally"

How close does Iran have to be to be able to strike the UK? The answer is that they could, theoretically, already be able to do it. Do people still want to do nothing? Honest question.

@MapleParadox_ @ridestheTalot ... Because motorists could not be relied upon to conduct their potentially very dangerous vehicle in a prudent and responsible manner.

@MapleParadox_ @ridestheTalot If a law is limited to motor vehicles, there is usually a reason for it. Speed limits and driving drunk also only apply to motor vehicles, because obviously the potential harm is much greater. Things like licenses, insurance, and speed limits only exist because of motor vehicles.

@MapleParadox_ @ridestheTalot "132 (1) No MOTOR vehicle shall be driven on a highway at such a slow rate of speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic ... " The rule-makers, who understood traffic needs far better back in the day, are way ahead of you. Obviously.

@MapleParadox_ @ridestheTalot Uh, nothing usually. Competent motorists pass it and carry on as usual. Incompetent ones lose their cool and do stupid things. In Ontario, at least, the rule on impeding traffic only applies to motor vehicles since most cyclists are incapable of travelling at the speed limit.

@MapleParadox_ @ridestheTalot I think you're the one who doesn't "get it". The speed limit is not a target, but a maximum. It's right there in the word, "limit", and it was only put in place because irresponsible motorists weren't able to drive to the conditions.

@MbarkCherguia That was at a time when people would throw their sewage out the top floor windows. The fellow was supposed to catch the sh*t on the brim of his hat. (Thank you very much ...) Doesn't really apply today, unless maybe the sidewalk is narrow and it's raining out.

@LensScientific Lets see: 1. Speed has a limit because frame rate or something similar prevents you from going faster. 2. There's a limit to how closely you can observe things. Because of limited pixel resolution, or something similar, things go awry when you try to fix position to precisely.

@Bill_Owen @mechanical_4u Much of the cycling literature suggests RPM should be held fairly constant. And it was a mystery: why do competitive cyclists turn the pedals at a high rate, while tests show people are more efficient at lower RPMs? Power is speed times force. There are two knobs you can twiddle

@Bill_Owen @mechanical_4u Sometimes you will want to tear it up at over 90 rpm, sometimes you will struggle to turn the pedals over at 60. Still the human body has ups and downs not accounted for by any machine.

Before modern indexed shifting became standard, some bicycles used fully mechanical automatic derailleur systems that changed gears without any rider input. Designs like the Suntour Auto Shift relied on centrifugal force generated by rear wheel rotation to control when and how the drivetrain shifted. As speed increased, internal rotating weights inside the mechanism moved outward, activating linkages that adjusted cable tension. This movement guided the derailleur across the cassette, allowing the bike to shift into higher gears automatically, then return to lower gears as speed dropped. Although innovative, these systems were sensitive to setup and riding conditions, which limited their long term adoption. Advances in indexed shifters and rider demand for precise manual control eventually replaced automatic mechanical solutions, turning designs like this into a rare but fascinating chapter in cycling engineering history.
