Why does the DoW keep losing elite talent over vaccine mandates? The U.S. military is hemorrhaging talent, both the experienced people already serving and the high-caliber recruits who would otherwise step up to serve. Case in point: Our 20-year licensed commercial pilot with Command Officer experience in the Civil Air Patrol. She is not some entry-level applicant. She’s a proven leader with hundreds of flight hours, real operational command background, and the exact skill set the Air Force and other branches desperately need right now. She would easily be eligible for a TS SCI with poly clearance. She refuses to take the 17 vaccinations required at boot camp - or ever. She’s chosen to focus on natural immunity and personal health autonomy instead. So she walks. This isn’t a single isolated story. There are two pilots she trained with in flight school - both passed BUDS and refused to be forced to take the COVID vaccine. The Navy began administrative separation processing, just like it did with roughly 1,800+ other sailors. While the Covid and flu vaccine mandates are theoretically no longer in place, young patriots don't trust the DoW due to leadership issues like those seen in this AK ANG situation. And there are still all 8-12 vaccines required (Anthrax and others can be added), or 17 for those without prior vaccination. Thousands of health-minded Americans who have deliberately built robust natural immunity through lifestyle, fitness, and informed choice are simply opting out of every U.S. military branch. They look at the mandatory vaccine list and say “no thanks.” They’re not anti-military. Just the opposite, as many are patriots like her who would serve in a heartbeat if the DoW weren’t forcing medical procedures they don’t want or need. The result? Existing talent continues to bleed out (retirements, separations, and refusals to re-enlist). Incoming talent walks away before they ever swear in. The DoW is turning away pilots, leaders, engineers, and operators who are otherwise perfectly qualified - all to protect a one-size-fits-all vaccine policy that ignores natural immunity, individual risk profiles, and basic bodily autonomy America’s military deserves the best.
