BREAKING: Former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson has been convicted for second-degree murder in the killing of Sonya Massey. The 36-year-old Black woman called 911 to her home for help and within moments of arriving, Grayson shot her.

Sonya Massey’s father delivered a powerful message after the guilty verdict in Sean Grayson’s trial. We now hope the court will impose a meaningful sentence that reflects the severity of these crimes and the life that was lost. We will continue to fight for Sonya’s family and for reforms that protect everyone from unlawful use of force.

It’s an absolute horror and tragedy that #SonyaMassey was murdered by a police officer as she clearly demonstrated mental distress. Even if she hadn’t, it would have still been a horror and tragedy. She should be alive. This conviction matters but is not the totality of justice, which includes heart change and legislative change. My heart goes out to Sonya’s family, whose loved one’s name is a hashtag because of Sean Grayson’s “trigger-happy policing.”
