DFW gang – TODAY, Tuesday, April 28 could feature some significant hailstorms somewhere nearby/over the MetroPlex or along I-30. There's even the chance of isolated baseball- to softball-sized hail! This will likely coincide with the evening commute, as storm(s) are expected to rapidly develop in the 3-5 p.m. time frame. Not everyone will see hail, but where hail occurs, it could be significant. This map depicts the maximum size potential IF a hailstorm forms. If you live in the MetroPlex, it's a good idea to park your vehicle(s) inside the garage or beneath the carport. We'll have a leftover front stalled near I-20/I-30. It will serve as the focal mechanism for storms this afternoon. Afternoon storms will erupt in an extremely juiced-up environment with copious storm fuel. Temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90, along with Gulf humidity, will make for a potent setup. We expect a couple supercell(s) to form, perhaps near the MetroPlex, by about 3 p.m. Initial rotating supercell(s) may split into pairs. Any "left splits" that spin clockwise would be significant hail-producers, whereas counterclockwise-spinning "right splits" would drift to the right (south) and potentially produce a tornado or two. Splitting supercells tend to be very good at cranking out big hail. A quick drop in temperature with height is further aiding in hail production. Plus it's dry aloft, which counterintuitively helps hail production; tiny, supercooled water droplets (characteristic of somewhat dry mid-levels) rime growing hailstones with additional layers of ice. Overall, it's a day to stay weather-aware.
