Artists, collectors are not your ATM... 💸💳
Don't get me wrong. This is a very rare rant on my end, that needs more context: so here is a thread to expand on this topic 🧵
As many collectors in this space I get quite a few shill DMs. I sometimes miss them, but my DMs are open.
There are various nuances to this approach:
1) Artists I collected a lot from: I actually value when artists I regularly collected from ping occasionally with alpha about upcoming / recently released pieces or collections. I see it as a way to show consideration for loyal collectors. Some of them became friends, and I always appreciate their messages.
2) Artists I never collected from: Here it gets more tricky.
There are 2 categories on my end:
1) AI artists: I will usually check out the work - no guarantees
2) Non-AI artists: I focus on AI, 99.5%+ of what I collect is AI and I typically decline. That's just my focus.
Where it gets more tricky is the actual approach. Here are some recent stories to help understand where I'm coming from with this tweet:
1) A non-AI artist asked me to review 10 of their works and asked me for my feedback. I stated in the intro that I collect AI art, but that I'd be happy to review. After reviewing the collection I get the sudden question "so which one are you gonna buy now?". I went back to the original point that I focus on AI art. The artist unfollowed me and blocked me after I had spent the time to review their collection...🤯
2) Artists I don't really know DM with very direct solicitations to buy their work / a piece. This is very borderline. If you start with an intro, explain your approach and style that's one thing. But if you just ping with the request 'could you buy this piece' it just sounds spammy and it makes me wonder to how many other collectors that message was sent. It typically starts with "Hi fam...." not even using your name.
3) I got a DM from an artist saying that AI art is crap, but that if I changed my mind I could buy their work 😂
I believe many collectors in this space are generally supportive & review hundreds of artworks a week. Buying a piece is still different vs. putting a little heart or a GM on X in my view. You put your money where your mouth is.
Marketing & promoting art is important but there is a difference between promotion and sending spammy & borderline aggressive messages asking to buy artworks.
I understand that the market context is not easy, but burning bridges with hyper direct solicitations is probably not the best way to start a relationship.
I believe mutual respect is necessary in this space. I deeply respect the work and struggles of many artists, but please be mindful in your approach.
Curious to hear what other collectors / artists think about this.
