Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Assigns First Full-Time School Resource Officer to Bennett Schools
Bennett, CO - The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the assignment of Deputy Kelly Searle as a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) serving @School29j, beginning today.
Deputy Searle, an eight-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, will be based at Bennett High School and will also support Bennett Middle School, Bennett Intermediate School, and Bennett Elementary School. The assignment reflects the Sheriff’s Office’s continued commitment to public safety in the @TownofBennett, and the surrounding areas.
“SROs provide a level of safety and security that is unmatched in the event of a violent incident at a school by serving as the first line of defense to save lives,” says Bureau Chief Ken McKlem. “In addition to that critical role, they mentor students, teach classes, respond to Safe2Tell tips, and help connect young people with resources when they are in crisis.”

The first deputy at the scene of a house fire in Centennial acted immediately and kicked in the front door to search for anyone trapped inside. Deputy Ligon, a School Resource Officer, then turned his attention outside, where he helped locate a dog hiding in a backyard. The fire ultimately destroyed two homes in the 19700 block of E. Radcliff Pl. on April 20. Thankfully, no one was injured.
This incident is a reminder that Arapahoe County is currently under a Stage 2 Burn Ban due to extremely high fire danger. All open burning is prohibited, including fire pits, wood-burning fires, and charcoal grills. Even a small ember can ignite a fast-moving and dangerous fire. Please follow the restrictions to help protect the community and first responders.

On April 10, the Special Response Team conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired plates. During the stop, deputies saw an open marijuana container in plain view. Four people were detained, and while one was being questioned, he took off running.
He didn't get far. Deputy Neyhart immediately pursued the man and quickly caught up to him, ultimately taking him into custody in front of a nearby store. The suspect was identified as Anthony Herrera, 33, a wanted fugitive with a serious criminal history, including first-degree murder.
Outstanding work by Deputy Neyhart in getting this dangerous individual off the street. Protecting our community is always our top priority.
